turbo upgrade
ok a few turbo choices out there, I want the zfr, but I don't want my tranny to go boom. looking for 380-400whp. what will give me that without risking my tranny. I hear the zfr has the the reputation of killing the tranny cause the torque comes on so fast. so far the 20g or the zfr. anything else that can give me my numbers on 94 octane. or even 350whp would be fine on pump gas,

its the torque that kills the tranny. Anything over 400 ftl lbs you are on thin ice. express that to your tuner he should boost ramp you(depending on your turbo) and use other torque managment techniques. also your driving style can help or not help. perhaps a tuner will chime in.

Pretty much any of the turbos listed about should get you in range of your power goals. The keys to keeping the trans (particularly 3rd) in one piece is to try not to get all too power happy, ramp in boost pretty progressively, utilize torque management in 3rd gear or ultimately a trans mod. That's really the main reason why I busted mine. I had a relatively mild 25psi tune for a while with a relatively slow boost ramp ta boot. Well long and short of it, I ultimately popped 3rd when I started pumping out 27-28psi on e47 and had a pretty minimal boost ramp. It's REALLY hard to not want more power though I'll tell ya that.. lol

Continuing trend within this platform. I'd love to see some of the cars if people decided to build their cars for usable power. More track cars would be nice, and a tad safer then highway pulls haha

all some people have is highway pulls. closest track around here is 2 hours away, so making a track car would be dumb for me. i want a car where i can daily drive with the occational empty road pulls for fun. got the power when i need it but mostly daily driver. And its always fun to put mustangs in their place when u run into one. truth is though, i enjoy the building more than the driving. id totally do the s256 is it? if i had the money for it, cause there is more involved in installation

S256 with a mild tune on 94 will do the trick. A marginally more laggy then the ZFR but might just be friendlier to your tranny. Plus you don't max out like you would with a smaller ZFR on pump gas. Lower your torque and have a dual boost switch to prolong the fun much longer then boosting 25 psi every time? Knock on wood so far from this setup. And your driving still has a lot to do with it too.

Out of fairness, isn't this really a continuing trend in most performance platforms? It really always has been for the most part. It's not exactly just a cobalt thing here. In reality, most are looking for the most power possible. That's the main name of the modding game really. Are quite a few of the mod selections always the best idea or realistic in the idea of a track car? Likely not.... but most are looking for the most power possible, not the fasted track times.
Personally, I never plan on tracking my cobalt. Never have, and likely never will. It's just a fun little street car for me that I enjoy ripping in from time to time. It's all usable power (for the most part) albeit maybe a tad more than the streets call for at times. I also wouldn't really classify myself in the "high hp" ranks either at only 437whp/408wtrq, but it always puts a smile on my face regardless.

Plan on upgrading your trans at some point regardless. I agree with 09cobalt, all previous vehicles I built were with the most power in mind but I also liked to track them.
