Ugh, Winter....

SO, up until now our winter here has been non exsistent....
Cars been great in the cooler weather and the predictions were for no snow this winter (YAY save on tires)

Well I woke up this morning to 15 CM (6.3 Inches) of snow on the ground.. soo I was like shitttt!
My car moves no where fast... but with the traction control off seems to get around better..

anyone have a cheaper solution for tires?
if not I am just gonna buy a beater I guess..

mine is stuck on my driveway... bald pirelli's are probably barely holding the car on the driveway. No idea on tires. the only way I can see you saving a little would be to find a set of 17" wheels and tires that will clear the Brembo's. But other than that 18" winter tires probably aren't super cheap.

Not much cheaper but a bit cheaper, I got myself a set of Falken Eurowinters from 1010tires.com for about $750 to my door and I love them

Sorry I forgot to mention they are the stock size 225/40/R18

I bought SS/NA Wheels and 17" Blizzaks for them. About 650 including the wheels and shipping when all said and done!

Grip is great considering these are low profile winter tires.

I don't know if were actually that much warmer then you guys last winter we hit -40 Celsius with Wind Chill a couple of times. And today were sitting at -10 with snow on the ground

Wait, so you just realised now that you're going to need a winter solution to the stock performance tires on the TC in the winters you get? I won't even attempt them here and our winters are nothing compared to yours, the manual states seperate snow tires are basically a necessity.

There's really no such thing as a "cheap solution" for winter wheels, you're looking no less than a 17" wheel and the rubber to wrap those or 18s is not cheap no matter how you bend it. Your best bet, find some decent wheels/tires, price them out, look into a beater and price out the insurance, storage and everything else and see where you end up.

I dunno if they're going to be all that great, but I don't want to spend upwards of $200 per tire on winter tires, so I'm going with these in 205/50/17:

Maybe you could look into them too?

Tirerack has some cheap rims 17" that fit the SS/TC. I recommend those and some snow tires. Then you can just swap wheels as you please.

I picked up some SSNA 17's sprayed em black, and slapped on some General altimax artic/nordfrost 3s. Havent seen snow yet, but im not ****** around this year. Go ahead old man winter.... BRING IT

Owning a beater is the best part of Winter! I do all sorts of retarded stuff in my old Nissan truck I love to charge the plow mount at the end of the street and basically jump it.

Yeah it was kinda fun rippin' da e-brake on the 94 dx lol. I bought it for 500 and threw about 300 in parts into it and a $35 ebay short ram. Little bastard got 39 mpg but it only had about 80 whp. My cobalt felt like a damn rocketship when I took it out of storage!

I just got a set of Drag DR-34 from Discount Tires Direct with Yokahama IG20 tires. I planned on getting General Altimax Arctics because I've had them before and loved them, but they were sold out. They seemed to have sold out of most of their winter tires in a matter of a couple days. Anyways, they may still have their $50 off wheels and tires. I got the wheels, tires, and install kit with free mounting and balancing and shipping. It came to around $880 after the $100 in discounts. The free shipping is a bonus, I had paid around $80 from Tire Rack to have wheels and tires shipped before.

I would go with wheels and tires. I was going to get a set of tires to fit the stock wheels, but there is a limited selection and you'll pay quite a bit for the tires. I think the cheapest I saw were Blizzak WS60s from $150 to $170 each. Hankook W300s may be cheaper, but they don't seem to be up to par from what I've read. After considering how much it will cost to have my tires swapped and such each year and the cost of tires that will fit an 18 inch wheel, I decided is was more cost effective to go with a dedicated winter wheel.
