Ummm... Problem

Alright, so yesterday my friend noticed black smoke coming out my exhaust when I would leave traffic lights. Well, I checked it out this morning and she puts out a little when I start her and she'll put out a little when revving up to like 5k or higher. Does any one have any clue what this could be? All I have done is a tune.

Alright, my main concern was it was an isolated problem with just mine. This is the first time it's ever been brought to my attention.

my friend said the same thing when i left a parking lot, I just figured it was because of my stage 2 tune.

even stock it runs a little rich. The beauty of DI cars. When I first turn mine over in the morning I have soot coming out for 30 seconds or so. I'm stock btw.

WOT I only hit 13 at my lowest.

Yea, I can't wait to start my car next to some prius or other hybrid lover. Their jaw will hit the floor when they see all of my heartless pollution of the earth.

Look at the inside of your exhaust tip...that's one hundred percent ozone depleting love. Or soot as some call it.

Turns out I was running quite a bit rich. Did some tuning and I'm back where I should be with AF ratios. Thanks guys!

Actually the cars run very lean for a turbo car, if you compare it to a non-direct injection turbo car. The dyno guys (who had never dyno'd a DI car) were concerned when they saw it! The black smoke coming out the back is pure SOOT. Soot is a byproduct of the DI process, the same process that produces soot from a diesel. Under transient conditions GDi engines produce about as much soot as a modern diesel engine. Even properly tuned, the car will cause the tailpipe to get black fairly quickly. It wont be long before particulate filters are required for GDi cars as they are now for diesel.

Not sure, all we had to do to fix the problem was mess with the long term fuel ratios.

Your car is stock other than a tune correct? If so, your MAF tables should not have needed to be touched. Your fuel trims should have been off by less than 1%.
