Exclamation Well hell... my first issues with the car

Oh well.

Anyways i was getting something that at first sounded like a cross between an exhaust leak and the turbo making weird noises when starting the car up and driving for the first few minutes. Not sure if it would truly go away or if i just couldn't hear it at speed. A few hundred miles later the car started developing a weird stutter at like 1800-2000 rpms. Hmm. Not really anything bad just a noticeable hesitation.

I still thought it was an exhaust leak or something until i jacked it up and changed the brakes. It was clearly something from what sounded like the valvetrain. Since then the car really has been mostly parked as i wanted to get a chance to take it apart and look at it. It started getting louder the times i would drive it to the mailbox and back it sounded like as well.

Yesterday i finally had a day off from work and popped the valvecover off and much to my suprise everything is bolted down and torqued correctly. Nothing had any play in it and nothing seemed out of place. The only thing i noticed was a spark plug had a crack in it. So i changed that and figured "success! maybe that was grounding out" only when i put it back together and started it up, she did the same thing.

Having not driven it in a while it actually seems even worse now. The sound seems to come and go and i can best describe it as knocking at idle but it seems to come and go. At partial throttle under 2500rpms its beginning to sound metallic and seems to keep pace with the engine speed although the sound tends to change a bit.

I am beginning to think its the phasers (maybe they arent getting proper oiling?). I drove it like 3 miles yesterday and it sounded like a tractor. However the exhaust sounds normal its only from the motor i hear anything. It also doesnt make the sound when you give it a healthy amount of gas/throttle.

I have a video but im at work and the video really sounds mostly like an exhaust leak from my phone. Ill see if i can post it up. Or check out my youtube page fordr1's channel - YouTube and ill have it hosted in a few. (if someone at a real computer wants to link it that would be awesome).

Let me know your thoughts.

If you found pushrods in your dohv engine then you've got bigger issues to worry about my friend..

Did you mean leash adjuster by any chance?

It's a DOHC not DOHV. All pushrod motors are DOHV. LOL!

Pop the hood and give a video of it idling and try to localize the noise.

I know one of the plastic guides is known to break. I don't remember which one exactly though.
I had a '95 Grand Am (2.3 Quad Four) that the chain started making noise. That was some time ago so it's hard to recall the issue. I think the chain stretched if I remember. Either way, it was a similar noise. In my case the chain was making contact at the top of the cover. But again, on a Grand Am.

Sounds alot like mine. Cold starting i can hear the tick. I drive the car and from about 1500-3000rpms it gets really noticeable. Then after a few minutes of driving it goes away. To me it sounds like an exhaust leak at the manifold on my car.

Ford, are you still having a late spool up? If so I bet your turbo to manifold gasket blew or the nuts on your manifold at the head backed off.

No, i fixed that. I guess i can take the turbo off and check the bolts. I am just being lazy when i get home after work. I guess i could take a day off to do it though.

I really dont feel its the gasket or an exhaust leak at all because of the knock at idle. Ill give that it certainly sounds like an exhaust leak in the video though. Ill take another vid tonight of it at idle and see what i can capture. Although no one say anything about how dirty the car is. They are cutting stone for the house next door and its covered in dirt/dust and almost looks like snow in my yard lol.

Take it to the dealer and have them charge you $200 for using aftermarket air and fuel.

They are building houses on each side of me and cutting stone for each of them. It is pointless to wash it right now. I would park it in the garage but I have my friends broken down cars in it lol.

I am actually leaning toward this right now. After listening to it last night... when it was strangely much much quieter it sounded as though it was coming directly from the timing chain. Sadly i didnt get home until around 8pm and it was time for dinner and walking to the dogs. I will have it apart again tonight to see.
