At what point do you look at a new clutch?
At what point do you look at a new clutch?
Hey guys,
After looking through all the mods people are doing, and the mods I plan on doing in the future, it's clear that we're all adding (many of us just planning on adding) a **** ton of horse and torque to the original clutch and flywheel. I see vids on youtube where the guy in the cobalt says he's having really bad flutter dumping and slipping. Is it not clear at that point that you're pushing the clutch just a hair too far?
My question is though, at what point does a new clutch become necessary for average performance? I know GMS1 brings us up to about ~285hp/~285tq? and it's designed to work with all original components. How much higher than that is it okay to push?

Its all in your tune and the boost ramping. Driving habits also play a big part in it. If your tuner ramps the boost aggressively then your clutch isn't going to last long. My clutch was done in on a 22psi trifecta tune. But then again I think that was the original owner as I believe it was his 1st manual trans car.
I am on a 21 psi E47 tune with a slow ramp in 3 rd gear. I started out on a 24 psi tune with a faster ramp bit my clutch started slipping. You go to a new clutch when you glaze the original or you want to get more power without the slippage. I'm staying at lower power until I can gather the parts and tools to get it done.
