From the sounds of it, your car is missing. As in misfiring. Haven't washed the engine bay lately, have you?

how would it eliminate the piston? If a cylinder has pretty much zero compression it can be a number of things. Compression ring, burned valves, piston. Compression test pretty much just narrows it down to which cylinder. An oil pressure test might be needed and a vacuum test will definitely help diagnose the problem all depending on the vacuum reading.
