Wish me luck..
Wish me luck..
Tearing down the bottom half of the engine this weekend (hopefully).
Over the last year, 6 months or so the car has been parked in my garage. First was the transmission (too damn cold to replace it), now its been parked due to a loud knock from the bottom end, and its been too damn hot to work on it (heat indexes in the 110-115 range, temps 100+).
Anyway, a bit of back story - Ive been having an issue with random misfires - not enough to throw a code, but more than I care for and increasing over the last few months. As a test, I had gapped the plugs smaller than I normally run (which is smaller than stock) which made no difference, so I gapped them slightly larger than stock to see if the numbers changed (yes I realize they would change for the worse if anything, but anyway). I was not driving the car hard because of this larger than normal gap. Anyway, my trifecta tune is keyed to my cruise control, which is very easy to accidentally hit when turning, and low and behold I engaged it without realizing it. I was merging into the highway when the car misfired like crazy (spark was being blown out) - I immediately let off, but noticed a horrible knock coming from the engine, and the exhaust had an odd note to it. Before I pulled over (unfortunately had to drive almost a mile to get out of the construction zone) I noticed there were no misfires being registered on the interceptors, but as soon as I pulled over at idle the misfire count on cyl1 went crazy - 0-255 and back to 0-255 and so on.
I pulled over - no visible hole in the block (thank god) or any other visible damage (full oil), but definitely a problem. Sounds like someone taking a hammer to the block - basically sounds like I spun a bearing. I towed it home.
There was no damage under the valve cover that I can see. All rockers in place, valve springs are not broken, lifters (from what I can see) are good.
So, tearing into the bottom half this weekend. Im going to pull the head and pistons, and see what damage there is.
Gotta pay to play!
