wot at 3k in 4th

Last night I was cruising about 62 in 4th gear about 3k rpm. Someone tried passing and I floored it and passed him. Didnt feel any clutch slippage. You guys think its ok to do that. Im tuned with Sri, dp,forge bpv and charge pipes

i would avoid it...but hey its your car. I have 70,000 miles on my stock clutch, tuned for about 50,000. I have zero slippage, but then again, i'll drop a gear over flooring it in whichever gear im in.
eventually it will bite you in the butt if you keep doing it.

Always drop it down unless your stock. I personally don't even go wot in 3rd below 60 mph.

I don't understand the logic. I would think that a lower gear would equate to greater torque (depending on speed) which would make you more likely to slip the clutch. Personally I can't gun it in first gear without slipping.

It's more about load than it is torque.

When you're in a taller gear, particularly 4th & 5th due to them both being overdriven, the engine and drivetrain load raises greatly as compared to being in say 1st or 2nd gear. This in return causes clutch slippage and very high cylinder temps especially at a lower rpm due to the greater load and boost at wot. Now it's not nearly as noticable at a higher rpm quite simply because the car is moving at a quicker rate of speed which then lowers the load again.

It's like it you took a mountain bike and put it in first grear. Your legs (the engine) have a much easier time turning the wheels due to a much lower load. Now on that same bike, put it in top gear and now try to take off. It is SUBSTANTIALLY more difficult until you get moving at a decent clip due to the greater load applied being in a higher gear.

Make sense?

Yeah makes perfect sense.

On another note, should my clutch be slipping when I gun it in first gear? I'm talking about if I'm at a dead stop and try and gun it the RPM's jump but it doesn't take off strong.

I mean technically it really shouldn't ever slip in a street car when it's fully engaged, but it's usually less likely to slip particularly in 1st like that. Are you sure it's not just wheel spin man? If you're basing it off of the whole "tire squeal" factor, or lack there of, I know my tires have never squealed when I roast them. So maybe you're just getting some minor tire spin and not really realizing it?

Yeah I suppose that's possible. Just a little bit ago I gunned it in second getting on the freeway and the same thing happened. I could feel something slip, and my car showed the 'low traction' sign. Would traction control kick in because of clutch slip or wheel slip or is it just one or the other?

That's wheel spin/slip. Your clutch is holding fine in 2nd and the power is trying to break the tires loose. With traction control on, it'll interfere and adjust accordingly to limit or stop wheel spin.

Clutch slip is noticeable when accelerating in gear (usually 3rd, 4th etc.) and the RPM's will rise but the car will not accelerate until the clutch "catches".

Good info. Is the best thing to do in this situation to not go WOT at first but ease into WOT?

Why cruise in 4th gear @ 60mph when you can be in 5th. If you want to pickup speed rev match, drop to 4th. If you want to gun it rev match, drop to 3rd.

This was the only time I have floored it in 4th at that rpm while being tuned for 2000 miles.

I wot basically in any gear at any RPM and never had ANY issue.

No burning clutch smell, or any sounds or abnormal issues to note. Stock GMS1 though.

AFAIK clutch slip is like if your driving and you tap the clutch pedal a tid bit, rpms go up but you dont really accelerate. Super noticeable
