Boost by gear works great

I had my 2nd gear in my HHR SS set up like this.

Initial boost was 22 psi, then gradually built to 27 psi (BNR 2871 GT) so I could get traction.

With my aftermarket tires and the boost set up that way I could just chirp the tires and go with full throttle.

If you mess with it enough in hp tuners you could get an awsome boost by gear set up with out any extra boxes. We can adjust boost by gear for every 500rpms from 1600 to red line. and you could most likely change that to be more precise in a certain range.

Hmmm If I was going to keep going with the car that would be my next upgrade before a turbo swap. Does it still retain the same shaft diameters as stock? Or would I need to get another new exedy clutch?

Hey cmiller8006, i know this is off topic, but with your s252 kit, were you able to dyno it when you had it, what did it put down??? You were running 27 pounds of boost, with 93 am I correct? Was it run with a manual boost controller, (how did you like that) or can zzp get this accomplished with just hptuners and factor ecu? Thanks.

I'd like to see how much a bone stock car would pick up with a 4.45 gear and tires... going from a 3.27 to a 4.10 in my mustang was a HUGE difference... freakin' LNF might even start to engine brake with more gear to drag it down...

I never did dyne it with the 252. I was running about 25 psi with a mbc but ZZP can tune it with the stock boost control to a certain point then you need to switch out I believe. But it's north of 30psi I also think. I was also BYT tuned on the 252, and it was tuned very well.

I haven't even got on it yet and can feel the acceleration difference. I would imagine it will be a huge improvement for stock car.

Lol I have found myself driving about 70 everywhere, it is just effortless. With the steeper gear it just likes to go, you can tell a difference in the tone of the engine that is is not trying as hard to pick up speed, and I no longer Have to downshift to pass.

The thing I like about mine is I can use 4th and 5th at the road track and dont even use 3rd gear. Auto X 2nd and sometimes 3rd. Pulls like a bitch. 88mph in the 1/8 mile

I am trying my hardest to get to the track this year yet. The roads were a little wet today and I did a second gear pull on only the gate pressure of 9 psi and the tires started spinning, it wouldn't do that before. This thing is going to get nuts on 30 psi.

Wondering what gear were you in doing 60mph? 5th gear? Also, are going to retune her since you got the new transmission installed? Boost by gear/ shift points?

I am super excited to see you run down the track as well. Are you still having Nick tune you?

Dont think i will make a pass this year at all. Need to get another car before i can risk tracking it. Dont have my work truck so until i get another DD the cobalt wont make another track pass.

Dont forget to post those youtube vids up.

I am going to go to ZZP due to the cams and possibly the new fuel mods that they have.

I wanna know your full list of mods. With that much hp wouldnt you want your gears to be a little long for traction. I actually love the fact i have to change gears less than other cars. My GTI was horrible it redlined 110mph in 4th gear. I do that in 3rd with my balt lol.

No issues with the cams at all. They have a couple fuel mods out there now, one is an extra injector set up that works like a meth system.

You are correct, however with what we have to work with at this time this is the best option. They do some internal work and add the different final drive. With my added rpm limit I still run 110 in third and just over 140 in fourth. But with the final drive the car accelerates alot harder. Its raining a bit harder than yesterday and I was able to get the car to spin in third just by rolling into the throttle, and its still only on the gate pressure of 9psi. lol.

By the way Chris my 4.45 at 2000 rpm = 50 mph and 2500 is 60 mph
