According to the manual it's fine to wait until the "change oil light" is on.
I change mine always between 15% and 20% and I must admit it's pretty black.

I've always wondered if that would damage the engine.

Yea, its not accurate... Its used for gma drivers who dont romp on it. If your on it at all, always change it at 30+% as it gets darker and bad MUCH faster...

its better to be safe than sorry, you know how you drive your car and how many miles you have traveled since your last oil change......dont rely on a computer

you're failing to realize that the percentage is based upon how you drive.

all that thing does is count miles until your next oil change, if your changing your oil before 6k miles your waisting your money, synthetic holds up much longer and we can go way over 6k with mobil1, take the mobil1 land rovers for example with over 200k on original mobil1 oil, if we ran regular oil it'd be wise to change early consistantly due to the oil breaking down, however synthetic doesn't break down so it maintains its protective properties no matter how old it is, were more the less changing our oil to keep the insides of our engines clean and free from any loose debris, but our oil doesnt go bad and turn to sludge like conventional, im no expert just going on a comparison article i read in a car magazine

It calculates oil wear based on RPMs and oil temperature, pretty accurate really. Most cars do not need an oil change at 3000 miles, it is just tradition. You can never hurt your car by changing the oil too soon, I rarely let mine go below 40%.

I've had mine go down to about 3%, it started flashing and telling me to change oil soon. I checked the oil, and it was dark, but not super dark. Nevertheless, I still changed it.

i never let mine go below 60% which for me is about 3000 miles. I know it may seem like i change my oil often, but i get free oil changes at my work even with mobil 1, so i don't mind it as much.

It's good to change your oil a few thousand miles after you buy it new. The owner's manual doesn't mention this, but better safe than sorry.
