that was just a round figure. the stock ss/sc accually produces more like 210-220 hp stock. it is 12.5 psi tho

Well here is the thing. Chevy rates the motor 205hp but people all over this site have dyno'd 210-220 to the wheels stock. So chevy under-rated these motors a lot. Also it's not just the s/c that produces the power. If you look at my sig and click on Dyno, you can see what the HP is throughout the rpm range. Hope that helps.

The good thing about the SS/SC is the SC is kind of like "power on demand". As long as you don't have too heavy a foot, you will get economy car gas milage (most people can easily get 25/30 city/hwy by keeping the revs low) Of course, the less powerful Cobalts will get even better milage, so it does depend really on what you're looking for. What competitors have you checked out so far?

gas always depends on how u drive it. if u drive normal and not always puchin it then its not gonna use as much. i know if u drive it right u should b able to get close to 30 mpg. but if ur punchin it all the time it will go down. i know i do and my info center says i should b doin bout 21 mpg the way i drive. lol

You won't get as many miles(km) per tank on the Cobalt as you do the Cavalier, because it has a smaller tank, but your milage should be comparable. My g/f has a 97 Z24, and her city milage is a little less than mine, but her highway is better. Your results may vary.

I believe you've got it backwards...the Cavalier has a 15 gal tank and the Cobalt is 13.

Maybe it's different in Canada?

No. The SS consumes roughly the same as the Z24 (23/29 mpg vs 22/32 for the Cavalier), but makes much more power. The smaller tank means you will fill it more often, but put less gas in each time.

To put it a different way, your money spent on gas should not change. (unless you become addicted to the SC whine, as so many of us have)

Hi Z24_4LIFE -

I get 24.5 mpg over the first 1200 miles with the car.

I drive it normally, but sometimes shift at 5k just to run the r's up a little.

I am sure I could get a steady 27mpg if I drove conservativley, and the car has enough torque to easily drive it short-shifting at 2500rpm.

best regards -

mqqn

You'll be losing money until you get over 'new car speed racer' period. Then you'll be fine. I was averaging about 20 mpg when in first got it. Now I'm around 27 city, and I still rip around some. On the freeway I get 29 to 34.

my gas mileage improved once the motor broke in..
my first few fill ups i was average around 21-23 mpg with "normal driving" (babying it some + giving it hell 1 or 2 times a day).. now i have about 6k miles on the car and my "normal driving" is now around 27 - 29 mpg.. my highest was around 32 mpg when i just babied it

FWIW, I'm also getting 24.5 mpg through my 2500 miles on the clock so far, and I drive through stop and go rush hour 5 days a week. Probably only 10-20% of my miles are actually open highway driving.

I got 40 MPG at one time. I drove really slow but I did it. Any way I can get anywere from 34 to 37 on average on the highway.

That period is lasting over 25,000miles for me. I've gotten 19mpg a few tanks...but almost 29 on the highway...in a redline
