2nd gear pull

Okay, I've recently purchased an 07 Cobalt SS/SC.
A friend and I took it to an abandoned runway to open it up a little bit and see how it runs bone stock.
I noticed a drastic pull difference from 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th over 2nd gear.
I'm not quite sure what's causing this?
It's not just a small difference, either. It's very noticeable.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or if anyone else was having the same problem stock?

ss/sc are all like that they pull like a mother beech in 2nd, its the sweet spot. wait till u mod it, its rediculous when u stomp it in second at 3 grand instant torque ftw

That's the thing, though.
I'm getting more pull from every other gear.
2nd gear pull blows.
I can't figure out why?

That is weird. Like everyone else has said, 2nd gear is money with most SS's. Mine pulls like a bat out of hell in 2nd.

Somethings up with 2nd gear in the trans. Previous owner probably had it at the track a few times and slammed the hell outta second gear and probably fucked it up.

lol some people if there was a problem with second gear it would grind going in to second and if second gear was fucked it wouldent pull at all in second op you ever thought the tune could be off or clutch slip or a bit of tire spin

Hey! An intelligent post!

If clutch slip was suspected he could tell in higher gears pretty easy by just stabbing the throttle. On the other hand i dont see how a tune would effect only 2nd gear. But if 2nd was fubar'ed you would definently know it, it would grind going in, get stuck in gear, not go anywhere at all. Ive never seen a gear go "halfway" out in a tranny.

Can you take a video of a pull in 2nd and 3rd gear? We could see a lot from what the RPMs are doing in those gears, clutch slip, flat spots in the tune etc.

yes the tune could be off in second and create flat spots espicallt if the car was modded and returned to stock with out much retune work or if the reflash dident take well as for the clutch slip mine would slip in second but no where else

I've driven every Cobalt motor quite a bit, be it stock or slightly modded and 2nd is for the sure best gear for all of em. No surprise.

Hey OP,

I just bought a Cobalt SS/SC, mine however is a 2006 and Mine does the same thing. Also my front rattles over bumps. The bump issue I still haven't figured out, but my mechanic noticed my clutch is messed up. So I'd start there. I'm looking to buy a new performance clutch with my stage kit purchase.

Hope this helps.

*** Oh forgot to add, my problem was intermittent too, it'd happen more often than not, but sometime it'd pull just fine, but most times it'll just kick my rpms all the way down to like 3500-4000ish during a flooring session. Also when I'd drive normal speed it'll like sputter during second gear like it was starved of air or fuel****

Yeah the previous owner fucked me on this sale. Well it was repo'd from the guy and I bought it from the whole seller

I do like the feed back, everyone. Thanks.
I'll do as one guy suggested.
I'll video the pull in 1st - 2nd - and then third and figure out how to post it. Give me a few hours, and i'll be back.
Thanks again!

Somewhere inbetween 12 - 15.
It just feels like 2nd is so sluggish compared to the rest of them.
Almost as if it's bogging down or losing power.
I'm uploading the video now, but it doesn't seem so noticeable in the video as it does in the car.

Well, I took the video sideways on my iPhone, haha, so you have to turn your head to see it right, but here it is.

on the iphone, to keep the video from rotating, make sure that before youpress the record button, that the phone is already rotated the way that you want to record

The tires spin with the shift into second, which is what you hear as soon as I shift, but after that it starts to kindof bog down it seems.

And the weird thing is it's JUST second gear.
It pulls like hell in any other gear, but second ******* blows.
About 2 weeks ago I ran it hard for a while, and one shift into second and it was like the gear wasn't even there. It wouldn't move. RPMS went up and nothing happened but a lot of noise. Let it set for a few to cool down, and it hasn't happened since, but i've heard a lot about the stock clutches and everything heating up and cause those problems if you shift to hard into second.

It's gotta be the clutch man. Since 2nd is the hardest(heaviest pull) gear, it's gotta be only partially grabbing in second. Or could be shift linkage.. IDK I'm not the most experienced, just throwing some suggestions out there.
