It's dumb to run 87 even bone stock, but with stage 2 is ******* retarded. Maybe a 2.2 would be a good choice for you.

Car NEEDS 91+ octane from stock and beyond, so no 87 wont be good enough.

It's one thing to tell someone their incorrect, it's another to insult the person.

 

I run 91 in my car all the time(that's what premium is around where I live). I've even told my wife to only put premium in my car while I'm gone and my car is still stock. I wouldn't even think about putting 87 in my car at all.

 

I have always since day one run my vehicle on 91 octane.. sometimes Sunoco 94 (depending on how bad I need gas and how far another station is), cause' Sunoco is pretty expensive..

sometimes 93 when I'm in Michigan.. but it never runs better or worse from 91-94 octane.. not faster or slower.. the same.. always..

but to answer your question dude.. no, 87 is no good for our cars.. it'll hurt it bad in the short and long run.. if you need to save some coin (just saying), mix your gas during a fill up is basically all that i can honestly recommend.. fill 1/2 with 91, and the other with 89.. although the difference between 87 and 91 on a fill up might be $5-$9 difference.. its all up to you..

 

in USD, its only like 3$ more to fill with premium than regular...... spend the 3$ !!!

 

If you don't want to spend a couple extra bucks for higher octane, then you SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING ANYTHING F/I!!!

There is a young buck that went to the local speed shop to get a 2.6" pulley put on and a dyno tune, and he had instant knock when the throttle was hit...The owner of the shop was like WTF!! Asked the youngin what fuel he was runnin and he replied "Regular" WHAT!?!? You can blow the motor running low octane fuel in just about any supercharged or Turbo'd vehicle. Detonation is the DEVIL!!! Ultra 93 ALL DAY LONG FO ME!!

 

and its always good to run 91 or higher in a new car anways. i think i ran 87 once because i wasnt paying attention and forgot.

 

I don't use 87 in anything but lawn mowers, it is just crap. You tell right away what kind of fuel some one uses my looking at the valves when you take the head off. 87 otc leaves behind ALLOT more deposits.

 

There's a reason I have an empty gun in the glove box of my car.

ummm please say you were kidding.... I have a 2.4L and it runs better on 91 or 93 then on 89 and i get better gas mileage... theres' a reason the dealer says to use 91 or above.. and there's a reason using 100octane will get you maybe 5-10 hp with a tune over normal pump gas... the higher the octane the more power... please don't blow your engine... put in 91 or leave it in the garage you're engine seriously probably cries whenever you turn it on witht eh amount of build up you probably have going on

 

yeah, I have the 2.79" and I HAVE to run only 93.....but I need a tune badly because even that isn't enough.....

 

Don't listen to these haters. If you think your car runs better with 87 octane then run it.
Hell if you think 87 octane runs better add a couple of gallons on soapy water next time you fill up ( will clean the injectors) and be totally impressed.



Why would you buy a supercharged Cobalt, spent the extra cash on stage 2 just to cheap out on the gas???????????

 

I hear people saying that they don't want to pay the difference in price between 87 and premium now that gas prices are getting higher, but when you think about it, the price difference is even LESS significant as the price in general goes higher. Really, you could save $2.50 on a complete fill up between premium and crap, but even if you add up all of the money you save, it will never add up to the cost of a set of pistons + labor, because people are not kidding when they say that you WILL blow your motor. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow.........jesus, I worry enough about blowing it up on 91 (our premium).

 

The higher octane simply resists preignition more so than lower octane fuel. Yes, with a tune you can make more power with 100 octane, but it's not because of the fuel; the fuel is "allowing" you to run that amount of timing/boost etc.

 

I'm sorry but this is not true. Cliffs notes of octane ratings is the ability to withstand detonation when compressed. The higher the # the more it can be compressed without igniting. Running more octane then recommended is not only wasting $$ it could actually hurt your performance by igniting too late kind of like retarding your timing. It has absolutely nothing to do with less cleaning agents etc.

HOWEVER to the origional poster, try to ignore the idiotic comments left by some. We've all asked "stupid" questions or been wrong about something. It's part of how we learn. If you never asked your "stupid" question, you would most likely end up with a blown up engine. I would rather answer your question then have you blow it up. One less SS on the road. So with that said run premium. The price difference doesn't even come close to the price of a new engine. HTH
