87 octane vs 94

Is there a noticable difference going with higher octane on the SS/SC. My dealer said the car runs fine on regular gas but isn't it good to run higher octane with a supercharger?

If you run it on 87 octane, you will lose performance. It will not hurt the car, but you will not get peak performance.

I run 91 octane in mine, and I get zero knock retard (I have a scan gauge, so I can see). So there would be no advantage to running higher than 91. But on less than 91, you get some knock retard, especially in hot weather.

I look at it this way - why pay for a supercharged car, and then skimp on $1.50 at the gas pumps and have your car end up performing not much better than the base model? Put 91 in it.

Just remember though, on most GM cars where fuel grade detection via knock sensing does not instantly go back to high performance once you start using 91+ octane. It takes about 2-3 full tanks of 91+ to get back to peek performance.

I put nothing but 93 octane in my ride. Its the only way to fly. The cost factor for using 87 to 93 or 91 is max 2.75 a tank full. Remember you bought a sports car not a family wagon..

If price is really a big deal, get a gas card... I have a Shell Citibank Credit Card and I get 5% of shell gasoline...

Thats super sweet.. I usually end up saving about 10 to 15 cents a gallons!

yep.. i got one too, it's called an "arizona credit card" it's pretty cool cause you only have to the card itself and never have to pay for gas again. might get shot in the process of using it, but hey it comes with the territory

Why did you buy the car if you can't afford to run 91+ octane? Did you actually think supercharged vehicles could run fine on regular gas?

The car will make more power on a lower octane fuel as long there is no knock. For instance if you can run 15 degrees advanced on 87 and have no knock you will make more power than running 15degrees advanced with 91 or 93.

must be nice to have a option higher than 91 at the pump

with out having to use 100 or higher race gas

So you are saying I should run regular gas? Because there is no knocking of any kind

Supercharged Engine = Higher cyl pressure's = More prone to Knock with crappy gas.

Ok.... So the new question i believe here is 91 or Ultra94 (I figure u live in canada if your talking about 94) I HAVE NO IDEA. I juggle between the two. I think 94 smells better when u rip by someone. I wish the would put some NOS sent in it so ppl would be like daaaaamn! Anyways jus my two cent. Never now some hot chick might see you pump 94 one day and BAM! ... sweet

If you are able to run 93 with no knock drop down to 91 and see how it is. If your till seeing 0 knock then try 87. As long as you have ZERO KNOCK with 87 octane you are SAFE. I would try out differnet driving styles to make sure you have no knock before being worry free.

People always think running higher octane means youll make more power. That isnt always the case. I can run my GTP all day with 12 degrees advanced on 87 and make good power with 0 KNOCK, any higher timming and I start to knock. If I kept my timming at 12 degrees and swtich to 93 octane It will run the same or might even be a tad slower.

When I want to turn my timming up to say 19-20+ degrees I have to switch back to 93 to have 0 KNOCK but I make a ton more power. Its actually like night and day, the car just plain screems.

Same goes for race gas. Race gas, 100octane or higher is just less prone to detonate. So if your car runs with ZERO knock there is no need to switch to race gas if you not changing boost levels or timming to take advantage of the fuel.

I hope this is clear.

I live in PA and we have Ultra94, so it's not just Canada. I don't run 94 at all, there's no need to since my car likes 93 just fine. And, LOL, I would never pay attention as to what octane gas a guy puts in a car...unless of course they put crappy gas in MY car in which case I'd be pissed.
