Alignment or Tire Balance???
Alignment or Tire Balance???
Igot into a car accident just a few hrs ago i went in top of a curb almost went down a ditch = (. Im in Chicago and the weather is messed up and so are the streets, i lost control of the car(2007 chevy cobalt ss/sc). My car is ok including myself thank god, my bumper is loose but no biggie i hope other than that i realized my steering wheel shakes? It shakes when im around 40mph and up, it does NOT shake when i accelerate or break. My rims arent bent i check that, what do i need to get done?
You could have broke an array of suspension parts, or could have broken the belt that is inside of a tire. What I would do is go to a tire shop and have them toss it up on the lift and look at it first. If everything appears to be in good working order they can test each tire to see if one of the tires belts broke, or if a rim is bent just enough that you can't see it, but would make the car shake.
There are a lot of different factors that play into this and it's though to say what it might be without looking at it. Sorry to hear about your troubles, next time slow down for the road conditions and make sure your car is prepared, aka snow tires!

First off I know your pain, I'm in the south suburbs of chicago and it's a god damn mess.
Second off, I would check your rims again very closely. You can also jack it up and just put your hand on every suspension piece (control arms, sway bar links, etc) and give it a nice tug back and forth and listen/feel for anything unusual.

coming from working at a tire and suspension place you most likely knocked it out of alignment or bent something... most of the time the tires will be fine but get the them on a balancer to see if you bent a rim or not
new rims
Ok so I went to 2 different mechanis and they both said my rims are bent. They checked the suspension if anything broke and it all seem ok. the rims were bent I coudlnt see it from the outside but from the inside the 2 front ones were bent like a ****. So time to get rims I got a gray cobalt ss/sc will balck rims on it look good? I'm actually glad I'm getting some new ones haha.
if you cant see the bend in the rim if the bead is still holding. the tire shop should be able to balance the ding out. we do it all the time.
most likely what happened is you knocked a weight off. making it off balance shaking happens at 3 because of that.
alignments cause pulling and uneven tire wear not shaking. you would see a sway bar link or a bad strut that would cause a shake.

They told me that 2 of my rims were bent when mine was shaking so bad and they put the bent ones on the back and one rim had slung the weights off. Well, the car drives perfect, so I dont see how my rims were bent. Make them put the bent ones on the back and see if it drives good. I dont think mine were bent or i would still probably feel it.
the back is stationary and you won't feel it as much...working at a tire shop when a tire asks for a lot of weight or if the rim is bent and the person can't buy a rim at that time we put it on the back so they don't feel it. put it back on the front and you will feel it. know from experience i have felt plenty of cars that shake and then put them on the back and it is fine...
Ok I got my back rims on the front and the front ones in the back... The steering wheel doesn't shake no more!!! But I realized my steering wheel is crook it? My car would be streight but the steering wheel would be off by a little. What now??
get your alignment done and make sure to have them double check to see if anything is bent...if not your lucky! but should be too bad to fix...i hit a curb once and it only took my like 3 hrs to fix everything, but i had a bent strut, snapped cv, snapped spindle, bent lower ball joint, only thing that survived was my tie rod haha!
