Another Air Box Modified

Did the air box mod tonight with the universal Spectre filter. Followed the instructions in the "how to" section with a few exceptions:

1. I did not find it necessary to use all three adapter rings. Using the largest two and leaving out the smallest seems to work fine, filter is on the flange inside the air box nice and snug.

2. Made a fairly good side hole for screw driver access. Why not, the hole just lets more air in!

3. Put the bottom of the airbox back on, but put a nice size hole in the center to allow air to easily enter the bottom element of the filter.

I reset the ECU, started her up and let her idle while I cleaned myself up a bit, took a 5 mile test drive. The sound is awesome and no CEL thus far.

One thing I'm wondering. Is the Spectre filter pre oiled from the factory? The package does not really say. I assumed it was because a heavy petrolium odor came out of the package when I opened it up, and the recharge oil is well sealed. Anybody know for sure?

To be continued tomorrow after a bit of shut eye.

i don't think they are pre-oiled, but i wasn't 100% sure so i sprayed a very light coat over the filter. as cheap as the filters cost, i would guess that they are not pre-oiled

you should oil it a tad, and then leave the entire bottom off of it, the sound is so much better. i drove around th eblock with the bottom on, came back took it off and tested it again, and then decided to leave it off.

Went back in last night. Lightly oiled the filter and left the bottom off of the air box. Reset the ECU again and went cruising. Sounds sweet and still no CEL problems.

OK, I take the freeway home from work and I work on 2nd shift so traffic is light to barely existent. The ramp I use to get on is long, straight, and slightly up hill. Got on last night and really opened her up for the first time with the new filter. Whamo...boost gage goes well past 10psi to 12-13psi where it belongs

Before changing the filter it would go up to about 10psi max. I was never sure how accurate the gage was so I never lost sleep over it. Accurate or not I now appear to be getting more boost with the filter replacement.

Wolfman I suggest you strongly to wait to buy a good CAI which as been previsouly dyno test. I am one of the few one who dyno the car with and without the airbox mod, and this mod have cause a HP loss.

Yea, I'm kinda confused here....
That would be the third car I've heard dyno'd and getting a loss with the airbox mod. Anyone have a reason for this?

It's not, also there is no difference in the mod or a CAI. If you do get a PO171(system lean), then it IS A GOOD thing. You are now drawing in more air! You get this code becuase the PCM has seen a difference in the amount of air entering the engine and is adding more fuel to compansate, which will send your fuel trim levels past their threshold. You say that you reset the PCM by disconnecting the battery, Wrong, won't always work. The PCM does have memory and back-up capasitors to prevent a loss of memory. The proper way to reset the fuel trims is with a Tech 2 scanner. Someone said they lost HP after this mod on a dyno, I do not believe the trims were reset properly and even if they were it was stated the drove around the block. It will take more than that to relearn there values. I have installed a K+N conical filter in mine (part# RF-1025) and left the bottom off with no problems. Oh yeah, the turbulance theory is just a theory, you did not change the distance of the inlet to MAF sensor and nobody has seen the airflow inside.

You don't THINK that it's not possible to lose HP with the airbox mod, but the real question is: Have you DYNO it ????

No, I did not dyno my car, but my point is that in my opinion the PCM has not adapted to the modification yet. Others are claiming HP increases WITH dyno results. I'm just saying it should be looked into further.
