another exhaust related thread- resonators

i built my exhaust last year. i have a clear image long tube header, 2.5" piping with a magnaflow 5x8x18" muffler and 36" long 6" round magnaflow muffler as a resonator. i love the sound, however the resonator hangs kinda low and after it bounced off a couple speed bumps its rattling. im thinking of going with something smaller. im wanting something thats max a 4" diameter body. im interested in knowing what others have and how it sounds.

as a side note, i am catless.

I had almost the same exact setup, but i had a pacesetter..

I paid 65 bucks for a resonator, and to get it welded on, along with all the joints in the pacesetter...

Local muffler shop...

Its been on the car about 5 months and havent had any problems.

I took the resonator off mine, I think it sounds better. You think it would sound ricy but it made mine deeper. If you look inside a resonator they don't have much in them at all, they only drop it a few DB. Cut it out and replace it with a pipe and see how you like it. if you want to hear mine PM me in a few days I'm going to make a short vid of my exhaust.

My resonator took the rasp and pop out. And the exhasut quieted down a good amount actually. I wouldnt take it off, IMO.

na i dont want to get rid of it, i think ittle be to uncontrolled of a sound. as it is, its the right tone and loudness. mabey ill try to get a smaller magnaflow resonator again.

Resonators dont really effect power so much...

Mine from a local muffler shop did the job perfectly..

Just go to a local shop and have them order a universal basically "no brand name" type. Dont pay the extra money for a Magnaflow. like Short and I said ours are great and they were 60-65 installed and welded.

Depends how big you get it...

bigger the more toned down it is..

It got rid of a good amount of rasp for me as well...

thats exactly why i got the magnaflow i did. the car is quiet, almost quieter than stock at idle and cruising, once you get on it its a very nice tone. all was good till i had to put my snowies on that are about 1" shorter than stock and i could go sideways into my driveway.

i guess ill check out what the parts stores have, i do all my own exhaust work anyways. just thought id see if anyone had anything specific they like.

its quieter than stock at idle, and quite quiet cruising. turns into a monster when you get on it hard, i love it, nobody suspects anything cause they cant hear it.

its a magnaflow round muffler, 6" round, 30" body (36 overall) 2.5 in/out, and i have a 5x8x18 magnaflow muffler out back. love the sound, i just cant tuck the resonator up high enough. im lowered on h&r race springs and my winter tires are shorter than stock, it makes the car a little low. im fine if i go sideways over everything, my problem was with the huge amount of snow we had this winter and after the plows came through i couldnt go sideways into my driveway and i scraped the exhaust rather hard, since then it rattles on startup.

ok bringing this back from the dead, i got a new resonator, its a cherry bomb, however looks no different than any other glass pack style resonator. now the car car sounds like complete crap. it has a nice sound at idle and light throttle, as soon as i get a little harder on the throttle it gets very raspy and extremly loud. im very disapointed with it.

right now im back to the drawing board. a friend of mine has a thrush resonator he pulled off his car, its the exact same dimentions as a my cherry bomb, but he said it was nice and quiet. another guy i know has the same resonator on a 2.2 ecotec and says its quiet, however he still has a cat and a different muffler. i honestly think im wasting my time putting it on, even though its free.

anyone have any thoughts??? im almost ready to find a stock cat-back, im sick of throwing time and money at this exhaust.

stock catback = FTMFL

IIRC, thrush is the same as cherry bomb and pretty much any other glasspack. same basic construction. I has a 29" overall length glasspack that I was going to install but might just use a straight pipe (I'm still rocking the stock catback, but i have a 3" zzp dp / header)

What I am contemplating is either glasspack or straight pipe (2.5"), CTI over-axle 2.5" mandrel, into the stock muffler which will be modified to accept 2.5" in. Should be better flowing and quiet.

I have not yet heard an aftermarket catback system that I like. The closest was a custom 2.5" with magnaflow muffler and a really large magnaflow resonator. that didnt sound too horrible.

I had the clear image 3" setup with a modified (resonator added) pacesetter...

the muffler broke and i replaced with the stock one... it actually sounds really nice...

as i said earlier in this thread, magnaflow muffler and huge magnaflow resonator sounded great, car is just too low for a 6" diameter resonator as it wont tuck into the tunnel.
