Anyone change their own oil yet?

I am looking at changing my oil here soon. I went and bought the filter except it wasn't a canned filter. All it was is the paper cartridge. I see there is a filter can in the front under the hood but to get to it, I would have to remove some tubing and maybe other stuff. Is this the proper thing to do or is there a better way? Looks like the oil changing is going to be a real dread..... Good thing I only change my oil when the oil life system tells me too...

I'm not going to bother to change my own oil. I do it in my other cars but the Cobalt I leave to the dealership because it only costs $10 more and they do it in 30 minutes or less. If something else happens, it's there fault and they fix

I was going to change my own oil, but my dealership sent me coupons for $10 off regular maintenance, so I think I'm going to let them deal with it. It wouldn't be a problem, except for wrestling with the stupid oil filter.

Change it yourself... It's very easy. Just unscrew the top and it comes right out, there is nothing to move... Oh, and I wouldn't trust a dealership with doing anything that I couldn't do... That's when they nail you with hidden fees and stuff. Plus if you do it yourself you can put the oil you want in there (MOBILE 1!!!)...

I agree.. I don't trust anyone to even change the oil. They either don't let it drain out fully, don't change the filter, leave the fill cap off, stick cheaper oil in there or some other screw up. You can't even verify they changed yoru filter very easily in the SS/SC like you could with most other cars.

Unexperienced people who don't give a crap about respecting your car do the work, especially with oil changes. It's a crap shoot everytime you let someone else do it. I wish you guys luck who let the dealership do it. Hopefully you don't need it. I'm sure many of you will have no problems, but I just can't take that chance anymore.

ToFU you are not using mobil1???????? See ya warranty. If you are not even using synthetic your engine is going to blow. Especially since it came form the factory with
Mobile1 in it. Hoe you have enough $ saved for a new engine

Royal Purple is also a synthetic. If I'm not mistaken it has been rated to perform as good or even better than Mobil 1.

However, I have to question "absolutely loving" it. I'm not trying to be a smart ass Tofu but what are you talking about?!? It's motor oil.

I change my own oil. I'm still using Mobile 1 because I can get it down the street at the local auto parts store.

Maybe placebo effect, but my car idled a lot better w/ the royal purple than it did w/ the Mobil 1.

Actually the tech @ the dealership I bought my SS from is the one who recommended royal purple. Looks like my warranty is still in tact.

i think he was talking about putting oil around the oil filter ring before u put it on.

another "tip" dont tighten it too tight because the oil filter expands with heat, when it starts feeling harder to turn just go in another half a turn.

When I first changed my oil back in May, I also thought it was weird to see just the filter w/o the can, but that's the way she came. On my 2.2, you don't have to take off any tubing or any scary components - all you've got to do is take the plastic engine cover off and unsrew the cap. It won't take too long, however, when you screw the filter back in, make sure to get the threading right - it might be plastic, but if you're in crooked it's a bitch to get out w/o stripping the threads and causing all kinds of nasty ****. Believe me, I speak from experience. Also, as the rest of the people said, get SYNTHETIC and don't be a douche, change it yourself!

Next time try leaving your drain plug out when you move to the filter. It drains a bit more oil out the pan, after the filter housing seal is broken. (Not much, but enough to make it worth it) And dont forget to reset your oil life monitor AND to keep your oil/filter purchase receipts, and fill in the date you did your own change in your maintenance record.

Also
Royal Purple IS NOT a GM approved synthetic oil
It cuurrently does NOT meet the GM4718M standard as outlined in your owners manual
Currently the only GM approved oils are (as of May 2005):
-Mobil 1
-Chevron Supreme Synthetic
-Texaco Havoline Synthetic

Using anything that is not specifically approved by the GM4718M standard, puts your engine warranty at risk.
