unless your running 10s or faster and it becomes more efficient and consistant to run an auto tranny, then never mod one ever in hopes it will be faster then its 5 spd counterpart - especially a 4 cyl econobox auto tranny, known for its horribly weak setup

Well to his own!!... i personally dun care what transmisson it is. I really don't think it matters. But some people sit there and bash on other people if they want the auto instead of the manual. That's pretty ignorant if u ask me.

Automatics have their upsides and downsides. If you are into track racing or just all out drag racing (track or street), automatics have their advantages over manuals.
1. Automatics can build boost on launches
2. There is no dropping in PSI (boost) between shifts, which means you can have full boost from start to finish
Now of course, I'm referring to a boosted automatic, not n/a.
As far as Automatics being "weak", you're speaking by myth. Automatics are typically stronger than manuals...of course this can vary from manufactuer to manufactuer but generally speaking, they are. You can put down a ton of a power on an automatic and not have to touch it, manuals you can't...clutch starts slipping or it's not holding properly.
Untill you guys are actually in a boosted automatic, you guys are speaking on hear say and not experience, period.

factory automatics use up more power, have crappy final drives, and poor shift points
now if your talking about a built up automatic thats a totally different ballgame... most manuals you wont have to do any work besides a clutch, and thats not unless your pushing quite a bit more power.

driving an automatic is boring, and gives someone a false sense of driver skill, when all you have to do is hold the pedal down

2. Manual helps IMMENSELY when downshifting for a corner.
3. If you know how to properly shift a manual, you should never see a PSI drop anyway...
I'm big into track racing and I would never ever ever ever drive anything but a manual out there. In an auto you're almost relying ENTIRELY on your brakes to slow you down. Which if you go to too many technical tracks, you'll see many a nieve automatic driver with brakes at least fried, if not on fire by the end of their runs. Can you downshift? Sure...but not nearly as precisely as a manual. The only automatics that are worth a damn on the track are the ultra high end autos with paddle shift, which are on cars which I can't afford anyway, so I'll stick with manual.
