Big hole, lower grill....

just wanting to know, hs anyone had anything go into that BIG hole down there and mess up the air conditioner and radiator cores? I hit a rabbit, yes a rabbit, at about 70mph the other night, and it chiped the paint on the front of the car, but it was less than 2 inches from going into that hole. Im just wondering if anyone has had any problems, or has made any modifications to this inlet to prevent items from going into it. reminds me of a jet engine inlet!

Mesh?

What about some type of screen or mesh? it wouldnt stop a rabbit but it would keep bugs off and might look cool if you could match the color of the car. I have thought about it, but havent seen anything like it.

You might need a cow catcher that is on front of a train. You might want to look into the 06 Cobalt SS. I see that it has a grill over that hole, maybe that can be fitted on the 05.

Advance Auto Parts (or mostly any auto parts store) carries the mesh, they sell it in a sheet then all you have to do is cut it to fit and secure it. I used the plastic cable ties, two on top (that are invisible) and 3 on the tiny posts at the bottom that you can see if you look REALLY hard at it.

I did the same as you Cat, but I tied the bottom on just like the top, to the three tabs that connect the lip to the bumper. Works fine so far especially since my car is yellow, even white ties showed pretty good. So threading them through the tabs worked best.

You can buy somthing similar @ Home Depot in a 4' x 8' sheet in the sheet rock dept. for about $6.00 that way you can paint to match and if it get's screwed up by highway junk you still have scrap @ home.

Chicken wire works too (unless that's what you're talking about), but I liked the chrome look of the mesh at Advance, that's why I went with that.

No it's not chicken wire it looks exactly like the mesh you have it is a chrome look too but it is made of aluminum. I like your mesh as well but doesn't that cost almost $40? I know it does after taxes here in the AZ.

also how strong is it, i mean, if i hit another rabbit or small animal, will it keep it from going into that area. I know it will mess stuff up but how stiff is it?

I think she already explained all that. Please take the time to read and save yourself, as well as others, a lot of time. One thing you'll get to know about Alicia is that she is very thorough, very helpful and she TAKES THE TIME to read posts to reduce redundant questions like yours. Thank you.

doesnt someone on here have the 06'? is there a grille??

also I'm always the one giving this point of view..

if you have a 1 sq ft opening, and you put a screen over it, it will get less air than without the screen.

Same goes with your car, put a grille on and you will get less air, should be fine but its common sense that you wouldnt get as much

Im sorry if this bothered u, i did not mean to be redundent, just dont want to go into parts store and say i need mesh like i seen on internert and look like a dumb ass.

The specific name for this mesh is called Gutter Guard. I just put it on last night and damn does it look nice...at least on the yellow. Anyways, I picked up a sheet for $1.57 that covered the entire opening at Home Depot. Yes, thats right is was less than $2! Depending on where you live you might want to try Lowe's or Menards as well. Just go into the gutter department and look for gutter guard though and you will be suprised how cheap this stuff is.
