if the tune was good dont change it put it in fire it up do a quick leak check and start driving it like a normal person would you dont want it to idle for very long 1 to 2 minutes tops. when driving it you want to load the rings heat and positave pressure is what makes rings seat bring it into boost but dont over do it and drive and enjoy it

to add to that, dont drive at constant speeds/rpm. freeway is bad for a new engine. if you have to drive on roads for a long time an constant speed, either drop a gear and drive for a couple minutes then upshift, or else drop 5-10mph for a couple minutes, then speed back up for a couple. also dont be reving it high, keep the rpm in a normal operating range. loading the motor up a bit is good to help seat the rings, i like to do it at lower rpm, get on the throttle a bit (not heavy), get it into boost a little bit and then let off and cruise again.

total break in can take up to 5000 miles. generally i will drive very easy for the first 100 miles, change the oil. drive it for the next 400 miles, change the oil. drive it another 500 miles, change the oil. after that go with your regular oil change intervals. after about 1000 miles you should be ok to go hard on it, just make sure your not beating the crap out of it.

I'll be doing the same so bump for some good info. Just how long does one run brad penn break in oil after a piston swap? I've heard 500 and then do it again for another 3000, but I'm guessing there are as many break in strategies as there are break ins.

ive never run a specific break in oil. the idea behind break in oil stems from the lack of zinc in todays oil. zinc used to be very important in oil, very much so with a flat tappet cam in the "old days." all oil used to contain zinc and its something thats been cut back on, and is really not that big a deal with modern engines.

to answer the question, its up to you what you run for break in. i know just about everybody here will tell you not to run synthetic during break in. now ive never tried it, however ive never been given a reason why not to, aside from the rings wont seat properly, but nobody can tell me what specifically causes it. further more, your engine was filled with mobil 1 from the first time it turned over and the rings seated fine, just like in thousands of performance cars that have been factory filled with synthetic.

my opinion: whatever you choose to break the motor in with id run up to 5000 miles, then switch it to whatever oil you plan to use.
