CANNOT get belt on!

I'm getting stressed and did the "Walk away from it" but I cannot get the serpintine belt on my LSJ for the life of me. I have a 2.8" on my supercharger now and a Stage 2 belt from ZZP that came with my Stage 3 kit.

I get it 1/4" from getting on the tensioner (tried having it on the tensioner then putting it on the SC to) but it just wont go. The wrench slips off or is at the end of the travel.

Also, does anyone have a diagram for the serpentine belt (Searched everywhere)? I'm pretty sure I have it on the way it came off but there is no diagram under my hood anywhere I can find.

I didn't think it should be THIS tight. It sure wasn't on my stock pulley and stock belt. I don't know how anyone would get it on with the stage 2 pulley!

Thanks in advance!

Joel

Use a pry bar to push down on the tensioner, much easier

try tilting the blower downwards towards the alternator. You should be able to get it like that. that's how I Do it

Chevy says use a 15mm wrench which works maybe once if you're lucky, then it slips off and you're done. Take a 9/16 wrench and just tap it on with a hammer. Makes a tight fit and will allow you to push the tensioner right down.

It's easier to do with 2 people. Have one push down on the tensioner with both hands with a pry bar / wrench whatever you are using and the other one slips the belt on.

Make sure you have ALL of the belt slack pulled up towards the top. Sometimes there is a little bit of slack around the alt or crank, etc and it all needs to be pulled up before you attempt to put the belt on or it's going to be a lot more difficult.

I just adjusted the tensioner first, then put the belt in place with the supercharger unbolted. belt goes on but you have to push down the supercharger

It's not a good idea to do it your way moranjames89, only because it can lead to you breaking off the little "guides" on the intake manifold if you are not careful. When you are using force to push something down and or then slide it around to line up on the intake manifold correctly, it can be bad. Just my 2 cents, but I personally would rather do things the right way, without the risk.

do it without it being mounted on the "guides" then pull the blower back and line it up. just takes a little bit from a can of man

weren't you banned??? And when I get frustrated like this guy, I get desperate and stupid... although like glowbalt said, they are not on the guides.. it's aligned, but all you gotta do is push down and put the bolts in, I did this 4 times now with no problems.

Banned? Nope I am a new member, just registered with this name like a day or two ago. We all do desperate things in frustration that's for sure haha. If you already have it all lined up though it makes sense. I just don't want anyone to break any parts because of improper installs

This^^ i LITERALLY do this every weekend, although like BlackTVS said, I did break one of those guides and it landed right in my IM. haha I got it out and hammered it back in. But since then I've been real careful and this way works perfect. You can do it yourself

I was just giving my 2 cents ya know. There are a lot of different ways you can do things, but there is a reason why gm / manuals say to do it the "right" way. If someone accidentally broke off one of the guides on the intake manifold and it landed inside, like you said, and they didn't realize it. It could be pretty bad as you can imagine lol.

I was just trying to give "exact" information since I am a new member. I don't want to step on any toes here or anything and I am sure the way you guys do it works for you

I've had mine off a few times. Get the "star" socket that fits your tensioner pulley. I can't remember the size without getting out of my chair and looking at it, but I got it for $4 bucks at pep-boys. Take that socket, put it in your wrench, put it in the tensioner pulley, and push down on it (towards the rear of the car) and put the belt on. Doing it this way will allow you plenty of room to get the belt on without a struggle. I'll check this thread again in the morning and if you still haven't gotten it fixed, I'll post a vid for you with the wrench size, belt removal. etc. Its easy if you've got the right tool.

I ended up leaving it in the garage and going to my girlfriends so I don't have it with me at the moment haha. I'm going to try again in the morning.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, glad to know I wasn't the only one who has ever had difficulty with it.

I'll try it without pushing on the SC first, but it doesn't seem like it will hurt it if I do it that way, I got it off that way.

So Stone629 are you saying there is a Torx bit directly in the center of the actual tensioner pulley? Like I said I don't have it with me at the moment now. But if thats what your saying that sounds like a great idea to try.

And as said I'll make sure I have ALL the slack out from underneath etc.

Thanks for the help, I'll let you know if I push my car off a bridge tommorow or not .

Joel

I was in the same boat as you when i installed my dual pass lol. Putting on my stage 2 the 15mm wrench worked but second time around it would just slip off and i couldn't get the belt on. Tapping on a 9/16 wrench works great and it's all ive used since. Try that first. If you push that tensioner all the way down and it still won't go on then something isn't routed right

I will update it but just so you know my name is Dave, I live in Carbondale il 62901, and I have been lurking the forums since I bought my car haha. You can think what you would like but I just registered a few days ago man haha.

Aight I'll try that for sure tommorow. It slipped a couple times trying tonight and now it just slips on mine too.

Do you have a diagram of the serpintine belt? Or could you quickly draw one up in paint?

I'm pretty sure it's on correctly but I checked my manual, under the hood, online and could not find one anywhere and had to do it from memory but it seems like it's the only way it could go.

Yeah when I first put my stage kit on way back the 15mm wrench worked to get the belt on. Then after that it would slip every time and I would bust my hand on the valve cover. After about 30 times of doing that I thought of another way

We have all busted knuckles using the 15mm wrench lol. That little notch wears down over time, especially with how much we change things around haha.

I have started to break the inside rib off my tensioner pulley now though with my new method. But I guess it is just since yesterday when I got mad trying to get the stock TVS pulley on myself and really pushed on it.....needless to say the 2.9 is still on! haha

Yes sir. Get that bit on there and it will push all the way down very easily. Once you get it pushed down, don't lay on it though. If you do, you will most likely break that bolt loose and have trouble holding it down. If you do end up breaking it loose, just pull back up on it until its good and tight, then go back down nice and slow. Its really simple, man. Let me go dig up that socket and I'll let you know exactly what size it is. Be a minute...

That's a cool pic, haven't seen that before! It's nice because it's super clear and easy to see and not extremely small.
