Can't figure out tapping noise

I have this tapping noise coming from, what it sounds like, the top of the engine. I replaced the lash adjusters and rockers. Thought it was gone then came back. It comes and goes through various rpm ranges. Any ideas on where to look next?

How acessable is that? Are you able to do it with messing up the timing or pulling the engine?

not sure, never had to do it. i'm sure someone who has will chime in on it. it shouldn't mess up the timing as your only inspecting it at this point.

If it's a ticking noise, its the tensioner. Pull your plugs out so your engine settles then use a 32MM socket on the back passanger side of the engine to remove the old tensioner being careful it comes out in once peice. Then replace with the new one from www.crateenginedepot.com.

Replace plugs, proceed on with life as if it never happened. Minus noise.

Cool. Thank you. Why pull the plugs? They are very new.

It was reccomended to me by someone else so there is no compression in the engine so it doesn't try to move at all while the tension is released from the chain and jump timing. Not saying it will happen (I doubt it would) but pulling the plugs eliminates the chance and takes under 5 minutes. All it does is make sure wherever the engine is settled is where it is staying.

This is true.

Definitely take them out. My buddy was told this by ZZP in person.

I replaced the tensioner and the tapping noise is still there. Anyone have any other idea on what to look at next. At the moment all I can think of are the injectors.

My throttle body ticked when it went bad. Went away when I revved it but would tick at idle.

Not sure exactly what caused it. Had 95k on it when replaced. Stopped hearing ticking after new throttle body.

Well I will add the throttle body to my things to check. Its not really a rattling noise, it is very much like a tapping sound. But i will take the advice and give the coupler a look at also. Any other ideas would be appreciated seeing how I am now hunting for this problem and just slowly eliminating things.

Are you absolutely sure it's coming from the top of the engine? If you have already replaced the tensioner, lifters and rockers, and it's definitely coming through the valve cover, then I would check your oil pressure. It may be that the lash adjusters aren't receiving enough oil, and partially collapsing as they operate. Blocked passages or casting flaws could be the cause of this. Also if you have access to a scan tool, try killing fuel to the cylinders. If the noise changes, you can just about guarantee it's a rod bearing or similar in the rotating assembly. Hope this helps.

I do have access to a scan tool so will be doing that. Whats weird though is the noise comes and goes.

Do you have any oil pressure concerns? Or possibly oil consumption?

Engine was just rebuilt. Installed forged pistons, destroyed stockers. But tapping noise has been there since then. I will check everything tonight and post. And will take video too.

Oil pressure checked out ok. Killed each cylinder with computer and noise never stopped once.

That definitely sounds like a valvetrain tick. It only started after the rebuild? What exectly did you replace?

It was only the bottom end. One new sleeve and put in all forged pistons.

I'm not professional here but I hear the "ticking" noise, if you will, through all the variations of RPMs you had whom ever rev it to. Sounds similar to a valve tick to my ears. My friend's jeep was just making this similar noise, no CEL thrown or anything and he just experienced valve float which in turn blew his motor.

I have heard this noise plenty of times and I am almost willing to bet an issue with a valve but I will stand corrected if proven wrong.

Just my .02 cents, would appreciate some insight from someone who has much more knowledge than I on our platforms as well as an over all mechanic aspect.

P.s I did tell my friend his valve was going to end up floating and sure as **** a week later he floated a valve and damaged piston #3.
