CEL due to CAI

im guessing the cel went on because i just put on my injen CAI. what are some remedies to turn it off. i read on this site about unplugging the battery and taking it to the dealership to clear it(dont really want to do). my dad has a scanner and i was wondering if maybe i could use that to clear the code. Any ideas? thanks for the help

check to see if you put your MAF sensor in correctly. it should have the side with the little open square facing the filter.

You did unplug your battery after the install, right? Your car needs to be reset in order to relearn the new air coming in. To clear the code itself, yes you can usually use a scan tool to clear it. The dealer will typically charge you for doing it so if you have the tool, do it yourself.

Hmmm. Black smoke would kinda scare me to be honest. Can't hurt to unplug your battery and then check it out. Either way the car should have a chance to relearn the mapping.

Honestly don't know what the smoke could mean, especially if all you did was install a new intake...

burning oil. Does it have a bluish tint to it?

Could be your valve seals, I had a camaro that did that.

What year is your car?

Obviously an oil leak somewhere in the motor would be the most likely culprit. Maybe your Royal Purple is too thin and is getting past the piston ring??? Should have absolutely nothing to do with the intake though.

Did you only notice it after the intake was on?

Filter being oiled won't cause that much black smoke to come out (in fact it should never cause anything like that unless you were pouring oil into it as it was running). I would get it checked ASAP and don't hammer on it too hard until you do...

The dealer. Is your car still under warranty and take the intake off and see if it still does it.

Well, shoulda got it checked as soon as you noticed any at all. If you still have warranty, I would swap the factory intake back on and take it to the dealership. If you don't any shop will do.

I would recommend changing out your Royal Purple for regular oil though. What kind of mileage do you have on your car???

cars still under warranty. but if it only does it with the intake theres no point in taken it to the dealer. figures spend 256 on a highly respectable intake and what you get in return. black smoke

I would just make sure that it is in fact the intake and no just some freak coincidence that something let go after you put that intake on. Swap it back, I know its a pain, but you have to know for sure.

Hold on here. It may not be the intake. Yes, driving more air into the motor may be showing the problem off more than before, but you said it was there before. Cars are not supposed to have black smoke coming out the back of them (well, gasoline ones anyway).

Trust me, put the stock one back on and check it out. Also, take it to the dealership, it can't hurt to have them check it out...

Royal Purple is supposed to be great. However, it might be too thin and going right past your seals. It's happened before. How long ago did you put the RP in?

nope. only thing i have performance wise is injen intake. and i consider the rp as a mod because it adds horse power but some people think differently. any way i didnt feel a need to get a tune with just an intake

Hey, just for fun, check to see if your MAF is plugged into the car. Also, while your at it, try cleaning the MAF. Maybe it's reading incorrectly and screwing something up?

No, not saying you should get one, just checking to see if anyone screwed up one on your car.
