Well it depends if you have the stock one on or not if so you need a pully puller but if not and you have the gm stage 2 kit it comes with special tools to take out the bolts

Help

Do you really need to get a better tensioner if I want to change the pulley to 2.79"? Wont the belt be good enough?

To get the belt off, you'll need something to push the tensioner pulley down. I think you can use a 15mm wrench but i'm not sure. Pulley Boys also sells something to push your tensioner pulley down, that's what I used, loved it.

I believe, if you have the GM stage 2 belt on you may not need a tensioner. Might want to pass that by someone else also.

i had a problem with the 15mm wrench rounding off the piece that you need to push and compress, but i took a slightly smaller english unit wrench which was tighter and it worked great (had to do a little pounding to get it on). After that, as long as they didn't tighten your pulley screws too much and you still have the keys that they gave you with stage 2, it should be easy. Took me about 25 minutes.
