Here recently I've heard what sounds like a slight chattering type sound under the valve cover on the passenger side. I'm thinking this could have something to do with the chain or the chain tensioner? Ive had my valve cover off 2 times for painting. The 2nd time one of the bolts on the backside towards the passenger side broke off from overtightening, but all other bolts are in place and tight.
I'd fix those bolts, and if you have the old style tensioner replace it.
You'll need a 32mm socket (same as oil filter).
take plugs out so the engine doesnt move anywhere, pull the tensioner out (make sure it comes out in one peice, mine exploded seconds after removal lol). Install new tensioner and be done with it, FYI when you get your new one it's normal for the pin to move in and out easily as it's oil pressure tensioned instead of spring.

does this require removing the valve cover? that would be awesome if it didn't. and the problem with fixing the bolt is that the head broke off that bolt so the bolt is broken down in the hole that it threads in and i don't have another bolt with that gasket type thing on it.
I'd order new bolts from GM and get an easy out to remove those screws.

ok. where can i get the new tensioner? i just read the how to on it and saw you don't need to remove the vc, but thanks. yea it's only one bolt that broke on me. I may go ahead and remove the valve cover again soon just to repaint it a little better this time now that it's getting warm out and also fix the bolts as stated.
www.crateenginedepot.com has it, Tom is a GM Dealership and this is his online store, awesome place.
