Check gas cap?

I was driving to school yesterday and as I was on my way the heads up display started beeping and read "check gas gap." I scratched my head and cleared the message because i could just check it once I got to school. Right before I reached school, the check engine light comes on. Im assuming these two things are related but not sure what the problem is because the gas cap was fine. Has anyone experienced this before? Anything helps guys. Thanks.

There is a gasket iirc correctly for the gas cap, so even though your cap is tight, you still may need a new gas cap. i'll try and find the thread
