Check Out My New CAI!!

Well i've been thinking about this one for a while and I actually saw another member a couple days ago did something similar. Well I went and bought my filter last summer and tried to do the airbox mod. Well this year I wanted to take it a step further so I ended up buying another members old stock intake and did some of my own fabrication. I just got done with it and this is how it turned out. Haven't put it on the car yet but I may do that this weekend. I know i'll probably still throw a lean code but now it's more like a CAI like the rest of them out there. Let me know what u think

I just couldn't "afro-engineer" things like that into my car. I think it's a pride issue, but I only want quality products that come from quality names in my baby. None of this "Well, I just used a box cutter on half the air box, used 21 twist ties and a radiator hose clamp, but she's on there now. The super glue will make sure she stays on there, too." But for the price, you really can't beat that.

not bad but two things to consider, a bypass for water and that filter will get dirty in a hurry. By a custom dry charger bag Good job though!

Paid $25 shipped for the AirBox and tubing. Compliments of Gramps a member of this community. Just post up in the classified section on here. I did. I titled mine "WTB Stock AirBox" and I got replies in a couple days. People who bought intakes want to get rid of their stock airbox because they have no use for it. I had a use for it though

No ghetto rigging here.. All i did was cut the box off and that little snorkel. The filter is held on with a hose clamp, yes, that came with the filter but how else is it suppose to stay on there. How does Injen and K&N filters hold on to their piping. Same way!! And no twist ties super glue or whatever else you can think of. Probably will get the same performance. Plus it got me thinking when my friend with an SRT-4 w/ Stage 2 and powertoys told me that he wasn't going to spend 200-300 dollars on an intake that will probably make about 3-5hp more anyways. So why not be creative. Yes the other intakes look awesome when u pop the hood. But functionality? Probably the same. I will still have my stock airbox if i want to change it back. Looks stock, same supercharger whine and assuming same performance gains, depends on the filter i guess. Trust me i don't like putting garbage into my car either. So all in all what the pricing came down to was:

Extra Airbox: $25.00 (which is the price I purchased it for)
Cone Filter: $25.00 (which I purchased last year) I tried the "Original" AirBox mod and didn't like it. The person who came up with it was on the right track. Just needed to hacksaw that extra garbage off.

Basically I took a hack saw and sawed the extra plastic off as shown in the picture and then took sandpaper and sanded down all the excess that the hacksaw left. Totally smooth now. Has a single mount by the filter which I noticed the K&N and Injen have. And I probably won't have to worry about any fitment issues like the Injen because i'm using the stock tubing. Any other questions for the people who are interested how I did it, feel free to ask. But it's pretty self explanitory. Happy modding!!

you're right ..custom fabbing is sooo ghetto ..who would want to save money and have nearly identicle results ... i would much rather get hosed for a "quality product" that has fitting issues and causes just as many CEL's

Nice work on the intake

Good job on the fabrication. Shows real ingenutity. Why would someone want to spend $200.00 to $300.00, for something you can create for alot less, which has the same results.

Lookin pretty doesn't make it any faster.

Bad ass. This is what I plan on doing in the next couple of weeks. So, you unclamped the air box, hacked-off the rest, and clamped the cone on?

Pretty much. What's nice is u can make sure the filter is on all the way. And I cut a little piece as shown in one of the pics so I can get the screwdriver to screw the clamp. But other than that it took like 5 minutes to do

I was going to use the K&N filter, instead. i don't know if installation will be any more difficult. They don't come with clamps though. You said you used an AEM cone? What size is the clamp?

BTW, is the blower alot louder now?

for the people that hate on home made horsepower all i have to say is this......

how the hell do you think 99% of muscle cars were hopped up ? There is more home made **** and in home ideas in those 10 sec cars than you could ever imagine... inginuity is not something to be scoffed at.. besides I made my cai out of my existing set up also... there is not glue... nothing rigged just two pieces of strap that bend and screwed right into the factory holes..... soooo clean.... IN YOUR FACE BITCHES !

i agree. I had a friend years back, who had a '92 GSX. It was a 13 sec car (which was fast in 1997), and his intake, exhaust, intercooler, etc was all custom made.

I haven't installed it yet, I will possibly tomorrow or sometime this weekend. Actually it was a Spectre filter that had the universal pieces. Not sure what size the clamp is

I think it is super and I commend you are your critical thinking to get to where you are with your modded home brew CAI. Are you going to dyno that thing to see what gains you have obtained?
