Cobalt SS blew engine, what now??
Hello everyone! My name is Gavin and I have a little bit of a problem..
I lent a friend money (never again
) and anyways he can't pay me back...
He does have a 2006 cobalt SS though that he wants to give me. This is what he told me.
"06 coablt ss 2.0 stage 2 superchager hanh header an exhaust tenzo r lowering springs still in the box and more the bad is it has 1 broke piston not sure why it broke i think its from the bottom of the spark plug broke off an craked it but the head an the cyl wall is fine just needs 1 new piston and an it will run again."
Now I'm expecting the absolute worst. That he's lieing about just fixing the piston and the whole engines toast but then again maybe he's right. I'm no engine guru (only 19) but I do know my way around vehicles. I've been obsessing over this website for the past 8 hours trying to learn lol. BTW the car looks immaculate despite the engine being bad.
But anyways he owes me 3000 and I will eventually get the money from him but should I instead take this and call it a day???
What would be the best option to fix this problem? Replace engine with another one or have someone rebuild it????
I"m lost and I did search, I promise. So be gentle

Welcome!
It really depends on the problem, if the piston is truly bad then you would be looking at around 500 to 700 for wiseco forged pistons if you want to go that route, or you could buy some stockers around here for cheap.
If its worse, and you are looking at an engine replacement. Ive seen them from 1500 to 2000 stock. or 2500+ For built. Look at it that way, for 5k you could have a brand new SS...I paid 10k for mine with 71k miles on it.

Owing you 3000. Even if you have to replace the motor your still making money on this deal. If nothing else replace the motor and sell the car, you could probably get at least $6000 for it
^^^Another option I was considering... Like I said perfect body and all... 62000 miles on the car by the way... I'm really thinking I would rather have it then 3 grand...
But I'm going to be honest, I can do all the bolt on crap yada yada but replacing a piston in an engine sounds like a big project for me... I would probably have to pay someone else to do it... With that being said, what would be the route you would take if you were in my position?
Sorry for the double post but ya'll are the fastest answering forum I've ever been on... Props.

ide take the car, fix it, and wala, you got yourself a NICE daily driver that is yours, and it has the potential to be fast if you turbo swap it or TVS it....ide keep it
I'd take the car and part it out if you don't think you could fix it. So many parts that you could sell easy and turn 3k out no problem. Like seats, dash trim, steering wheel, m62, intake mani, shifter assembly. Could probably sell the trans to someone. People are always looking for parts.
Depends how mechanically inclined you are. Cheapest route is to tear it down yourself and see the damage.
Trying to post some pics so you have some **** to look at

Here are a couple situations:
The cylinder walls aren't scratched up at all and don't need work (which they probably are), you could just buy stock pistons or one and replace it. Since you say you probably can't do that by yourself I would say you could get it done for less than $1000.
If the block is fucked and its easier to replace the entire engine, at the very most I would say $4000 including labor, but then you can part out the broken engine, there are plenty of parts you could sell and maybe even make $1000 back from selling those parts.
But you could look around for a lightly used lsj longblock (thats the motor you need) and have a smaller/cheaper shop do that swap and your looking around $2500-3000 total. And you would still have the wrecked motor to part out.
Personally I would say if you have the extra cash just buy a new motor and you have a great car for cheap
Any other questions or information you get post up!

is that a factory color for 06?
anyways. i would take it, and fix it. just go to a junkyard and get a motor for it. throw the motor in. now you could keep the car or throw it up for sale on craigslist or something for 8K and see what you get. then you can tear down the motor thats blown and learn some more about how it all works.

I think I could do a motor swap. I replaced my dodge ram motor once and since I got the sane year engine it was basically all plug and play. I think I would rather just by another engine from the same car and switch it over. So what kind of engine am I telling junkyards I want? 2006-07 cobalt as engine?
I would totally take this on as a project! Like everyone said partout alone you can get 3k out of it. Take it as a learning expierence as well tear it down label everything and atleast find out whats wrong and if its to much to fix it part it out.. win win scenario in my opinion
