coolant @217 degrees?
coolant @217 degrees?
Ok, so i told my girlfriend she could sit in the car and leave it on to stay warm as long as she watched the coolant and shut it off if it got too hot...well she didnt watch the coolant and when i returned it was at 217 degrees. i shut the car off immideiatly and let it cool. Its running fine...could this have caused any damage?
engines run more efficiently when they are hot, all the low temp t-stat stuff is bs, you need a hot motor for efficient combustion. optimal is actualy around 195
basicly dont worry till it hits 235-240, thats when you have issues.

in my 2.2 i hit as high as 220. freaked me out the first time too, but after some research i found out it's not a big deal. it will go down as soon as youstart driving. the cobalt depends on moving air while you're driving to cool down. in traffic, or at lights if it goes up nothing to worry about.
As long as it doesn't go over 240 you are fine. GM doesn't command low speed fans till 223 and high speed till 230. This is to help get better emissions and for no other reason. During the summer it used to be common that I would see 230 to 232 sitting in traffic, at least until I changed the fans to come on at 209 for low speed and 221 for high speed. Now I haven't seen any tempuratures above 211.
