Cooling Questions
Cooling Questions
Im wondering how far can i go with mods before i need to think about engine temps getting too crazy?
My 06 ss/sc is stock other than injen intake, but i'm gonna buy full exhaust in spring hopefully, header, DP, catback etc...
so, when do i need to think about intercooling mods?
thanks.

The general consensus states anything smaller than a 2.8" pulley on the sc should have some sort of extra cooling support. GM has a dual-pass for their Stage 3 pulley and it's of course bigger than 2.8". I think it's wise to support with cooling mods for anything lower than a 2.9" pulley. Of course different factors (environmental, elevation, etc) will ultimately affect the heat generated by smaller pulleys.

^^*3.06
OP: just so you know too....when people talk about temps, and cooling, its not engine temps they mean.
The temps that we worry about with the SS/SC are the IAT2 temps (intake air temperature after the supercharger)
these are the temps that are helped by mods like Dual pass kits, Secondary heat exchangers, Meth injection etc etc.
The temperature readout on your dash only reads the engine coolant temperature. To monitor IAT2 temps you need a gauge that can read it from your PCM, im a big fan of the interceptor gauges, as they do this, and alot more, great for modifying and monitoring your engine.

huh, so its a 3.06 pulley. and i didnt know about the IAT2 temps either. Im still a cobalt noobie.
thanks alot!
so how hard is it to change th 3" pulley to a smaller one, are the gains greater and is there any tuning to do?

about the smallest you want to go with the stage 2 injectors is a 2.9 or 2.85" pulley. also it is recomended at that point that you put in a secondary heat exchanger, and the dual pass intercooler plate would be ideal. you ewill gain a little more boost, but also have the boost come up quicker.
before you do any of that, would be ideal to upgrade the exaust. a header, downpipe and cat back will be bennificial.

thats good to know. is there really that signifigant of an increase in power between the 3.06 and the 2.9 pulleys?
kenhebe - there is a guy where im from selling a zzp 3" downpipe and catback exhaust. i'm prob gonna buy it. how was the increase with your 2.5" system?
thanks.
