Cracked # 4 piston
Cracked # 4 piston
Ok just a question, I have had the balt less than a month. Right now my number 4 piston is cracked. Any idea where I can get a set of stock/forged pistons for a decent price. Also, does anyone know a ballpark on what someone would charge to put them in?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
Yes!!!
Thanks man!!
Any idea where I can buy the LSJ build book, I saw a PDF but I would like to have the actual book

check out ottperformance.com
they have rods for 1k and pstons/rings and clips for 600
install will take you a weekend
also if you are looking for ultimate reliability i would suggest Darton MID sleeves as well
they are 685 + Darton will install them for 600 if you mail your block to them (10day turnaround)

So it is something I can install myself, I have all the tools and what not just never done work on the block just bolt ons.
Would it be better in the experience of a Mechanic?
Any ideas how much I am looking at labor.
I had a fellow forum member help me discover the cracked piston. Shout out to his help.
He took out the number 4 spark plug and it had oil on it. I guess a classic sign of a cracked piston. not to mention I am leaking oil and my car sounds like a SUBY.
Prior to the cracked piston I had a clogged cat and was boosting upto 20 psi with nothing but back pressure so I am guessing this caused the crack.
Any ideas what I need to buy besides the piston and rings. He said a hone, but I will be honest I have an idea of what it is but don't see why I need it. Any info would be great guys thanks for the help!!!

Thanks man sucks I had the car a month. Put on stage 2,CAI DP/HEADERS/CBE, just ordered 2.9 and 60 pound injectors was about to take it to get a tune and BAM this happens. I guess this gives me an excuse to build the engine.
make some effort
Clearly I did search, I checked the FS thread and nothing recent for sale. I did a google search on cobalt 2.0 headers and nothing of help came up plus I had several other questions. Get a life dude seriously.
Anybody have an idea on what I am looking at to have a single piston installed?

Oil on a plug for a cracked piston???
THere are several things that could cause oil on a spark plug.
Leaking valve cover gasket, where the gasket goes arround the plug hole
Leaking head gasket
Excessive Valve guide/stem clearances
-Worn Valve guides
-Worn Valve stems
You could just be running really rich
You may just have worn piston rings
Do a compression test.
Borescope the cylinder through the spark plug hole to see if
you can see the crack.
If your gona pull the pistons out,
Check them with a penetrant inspection. Basicly it seeps into cracks,
and makes small cracks show very easily. If they are fine, swap the rings,
rehone the cylinders, measure your cylinders and pistons out. Sounds like
your in for at least a partial overhaul anyway. Check the valve stem/guide clearances
and valve seats.

Thanks for the info, I am going to take it to the stealership and have them dick with it. Once it comes to the block I am stupid.
First off welcome to the club.
secondly, I'd reccomend diamond racing, you can probably stick with the stock rods unless you are going for crazy hp. Rod bearings and save your pennies to replace all the bolts and get a cosmetic headgasket and arp headstuds, along with The random little stuff and you are good to go. Your probably looking at 1200 bucks..... Arround that, when it's all said and done
I just read the whole thread, if I were you I would do a little investigating before you buy pistons, definately run a compression test, are you getting blowby?
