Crate Engine Magnetic Drain Plug

I was just wondering, did the Cobalts ever come with the magetic drainplugs from the factory that crate engine depot sells?

http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...P1751C193.aspx

Or are these the new style OE replacements GM is starting to use?

Have you changed any 07s?

Anyone work in a chevy parts departmen? Can tell if the magnetic plugs are the new OE replacements, or if the standard drain plugs are still sold?

I had one in mince since 500 miles when i did my first oil change. This is only because I put it in there. there is no negetive reason i know of not to get one. I consider this a GOOD "mod".

To answer your question. NO ecotecs do not COME with them. This is a GM part but its the same thread pattern for lots of other gm motors.

When you pull the plug any metal shavings will stick to the plug.
Therfore you can monitor if you have a large amount of shavings
and correct the problem before it gets bad!

Thanks for reminding me, I gotta order one from my parts guy. All the GM stuff uses the same plug size, but for some reason ours is not magnetic. The one in my dads truck is the same plug but with the magnet. I gotta get one of those.

Yeah, I forgot about it until I changed my oil last week. Now it will be 4 months until I do it again, so I will probably forget by then. Oh well.

How the hell does this car NOT have one from the factory?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Even my Cavalier had one OEM......damn, that's a huge oversight on GM's part if that's true...

I changed my oil yesterday and I replaced my plug with the magnetic one. It threaded fine and it is the same length plug. It just has a magnet on the end. The bolt head size is smaller on the magnetic one. I will have to look at my socket when I get home and see what size it was.

I would recommend this to anyone with a Cobalt. I should be a little extra safety for the engine. I will have to wait until next oil change to see if it is actually collecting metal shavings.

I bet it will have some metal on it. I will do it next oil change, but that is a ways off. I never remember to get one until I have the oil out of the car. The magnetic one should be a 15mm, which is the same as the stock one. Unless you are using a different magnetic one than the one on other GM products.

I took the page that is on Crate Engine Depots page to my GM dealer. They had one in stock and I bought one from them. It was about $0.50 more with tax than Crate Engine Depot, but no shipping and handling. It is actually a 13mm. I know this because I did this last night and the socket is still sitting on the wrench. I don't know why GM would change it, but they did.
