Dipstick popped out?!?!?! WTF!

Well I got home from school today and was gettin in the car to go to work. well my belt normally squeels when its cold and goes away when it warms up. but anyway it was squeeling way un-normal so I popped the hood and the dipstick was half way out and oil everywhere!

So I put the dipstick back in and drove to a car wash and washed the car and the engine bay. so I went to work and when I got there the belt starting squeeling again so I was like WTF. I popped the hood and sure enough the dipstick was out again and oil everywhere about 15 mins after I just made the engine bay look brand new and was sparkling!

Anyway it seems that the rubber O rings dont grab very well on the dipstick. So I put a very fine piece of rope there and then the O ring around that to make the ring a tad bit bigger. drove home and seems fine.

Anyway I believe I read this on here that someone else had this problem and almost blew the motor. I believe that if the oil is a little over-full this would happen. I had my oil changed about 3 weeks ago since I work at Jiffy lube I do it every 1,000 miles. I thought it was a lil over-full but not by much so I left it alone. So I changed it again today and oil level is perfect and nothing has happened yet. so either its because of the oil being over-full or my lil dipstick mod worked.

sorry for this rant but I figured everyone should know this and to watch for this dipstick problem! it has happened to someone on here before me! post if it happened to you! maybe we can turn this into a sticky!

The dipstick is rather easy to pull out, I have pulled it out and even used it to knock off my oil pan, i think i might do your little rope trick when i put her all back together

ok i was exaggerating a lil bit. normally every 2500 miles. If I go to the track I will change it the day before and the day after the track. I mean I get it for free so why not?! but I dunno this little rope trick seems to do what I hoped it will do. I will let u know when I take the 25 mile trip to school in the morning!

Haha this is a common dsm problem.... If you get a pair of pliers and head for the actual tube the dipstick goes in and jus give it a lil pinch. It will be hard to blow out but have no probs removing it as normal, also wont look stupid tied in or ziptied up!

your real problem stems from the fact that you have to much pressure built up, you can tie the dip so it doesn't pop up, or you can get a breather filter (illegal almost everywhere, damn emmissions) and it will relieve some of the crankcase pressure better.

ya even GM has told me (GMPD) that this is because of the breathing ability and higher boost.
the pinch idea is good, or maybe zip ties.
our pcv system cant handle the amount of boost the engine can...a breather as said before or if you want to drill out your vavle cover and put larger 3/4" breathing on it

Another possible "fix" is to find some o-rings that are slightly larger (and I do mean SLIGHTLY!) so that the dipstick sticks a little harder in the tube.

Make sure your valve cover ventilation hose is connected to the intake - that relieves some pressure -- since the intake is creating a vacuum. A filter will not allevaite the problem any better unless you enlarge the fitting port.

steeda is on this as we speak , for now its bigger orings and the dipstick takes some force to come out now.
stay tuned.

You might just need to replace the OE one. They get old and deformed and don't seal as well. Basically every auto parts store will have a variety box of O-rings available - just need to make sure they can withstand contact with oil.

More importantly, what does your PCV system look like? Is it all hooked up or are you VTA? You might just need to replace the one-way valve that's located in the Intake Manifold and/or check for clogs with the valve cover. The valve cover port is notoriously undersized - upgrading it to a -10an connection would be a good fix.

Typically, if you're having a real issue with blowing the dipstick out under boost conditions, it's because you're pressurizing the crankcase, so you've either got a PCV leak or leaky piston rings.

I will replace the oem one then, the dipstick does have 86k miles. The engine is newer, it has a few thousand miles. I believe the issue is mainly the damn o-rings.

My PCV setup is stock, I know it serves a purpose, and I actually ordered the 10an fitting over 6-weeks ago from HAHN and never got it. They did charge me, however LOL
