Question Engine Break-In Question!

Did anyone dump out the Mobil 1 synthetic oil and break-in the engine with regular motor oil? I've heard that you are not supposed to break engines in with synthetic oil, but I'm not sure if this is true or just b.s.? This car is a product of GM's Performance Division, so it's been tested hard. I can't see GM shipping the SS-SC with Mobil 1 if it wouldn't be OK to break them in with? Plus it runs low compression due to the superharger (which is why they use mobil 1). Any advice would be appreciated.

And second, how did you guys break the engine in? Grannied them the first while, or did a little high-RPM throttle loading and engine-braking? I am especially curious to hear from those people who dyno'd their cars stock and got incredible 210+ WHP numbers!

Thanks!

I guess the mobil 1 from the factory has certain things in it to help break in the engine. (thats what i have heard). I never heard of anyone dumping out the oil, i changed my oil at about 1300 miles with the recommended mobil 1.

i have not dyno'd my car, but i babied it during break in, with occasional full throttle's, which i heard is good. everybody has their own way of breaking it in, some on here go crazy and say its good to run it hard for the seals or something, its just your best bet to be safe on the clutch and breaks for the first 500 miles.

proper break in is, never keep the engine at the same RPM for an extended period of time, for the first 500 miles. Do not do full throttle take off's for the first 500 miles.

Also, I dyno'd at 220hp 191tq at and I went full throttle a couple times for a couple seconds in High gears. I heard somewhere that was good for break in.

i drove mine easy for the fisrt 600 or so miles starting out real easy and as the miles racked up i kept getting a little more aggressive. I kept the mobil 1 in, GM pays millions for engineers to figure the best way for these engines to operate and not fail. I did change the oil after 1500 miles and noticed a lot of metal shavings on the drain plug (its magnetic) On the second oil change at 4500 miles there were no shavings at all. Hope this helps.

Stick with the Mobil 1 5W-30 newer engine formula. That's what it comes with from the factory. Very high quility motor oil. Stick with what is recommended! As far as break-in, you should be good after 500 miles. I waited for 1000 miles. While I was breaking it in I would give half throttle in 1st up to and not past 5000rpm. Same thing with 2nd gear. I did this to make sure the s/c would get some work to. If you drive like a baby you may not get good boost until you have a couple of thousand miles on it! I changed the oil with about 2700 miles on it and found no metal at all on the plug!

why are people changing their oil so soon, go by the oil life meter because they use the high mileage mobil 1

I have about 1100 miles on the car, and I am planning the first old change at 1,500 miles. I have babied the car till about 500 miles, and then I began to get a little aggressive as the miles attached. I think I’ve only got on it full throttle about 2 times, and try to stay away from high RPMS. But from what I’ve read, this car reaches it power at high RPMS right under the point in which the rev limiter kicks in. I've hit the rev limited a few times, while missing third gear, but I’ve learned the deal with that, and don’t do it anymore. Since the car is part of the GM performance division, I’d imagine that the car might have been tested in some sort to meet a standard. When they build these cars, they expect people to be rough with them, and they are made to handle heavy loads on the engine... hence the supercharger, and it being a "sport" car.

It's all your opinion.

On my mom's impala, it said do not do the first oil change until the oil life meter is depleted. Even if that means 5000+ miles... Too lazy to look at the 'balt manual to see if the same is true for our cars.

A lot of people have been trying out the "break it in like how you expect to drive it" method going around on a couple sites...some people swear by it. Break it in hard if your gonna drive it hard makes sense if you think about it, helping to seal the rings better, etc etc...I don't know if I'd be comfortable with doing that though.

oh and btw, stick with the synthetic stuff. It's in their for a reason and IMO better than the dino stuff.

all you guys wondering about break in? its in your owners manual. I had i 2002 s-10 x-treme before i got my 2005 coablt ss and in the owners manual it said that the proper break in was: No full throttle takes, no really hard stops( you do have to break in the brakes too guys),and no high speeds for the first 500 miles. That is the proper break in from gm.

exactly, follow the break-in in the manual. Anyhow, this isn't the first GM car to come with Mobil one straight from the factory... Corvettes come with Mobil 1 straight, and thats what you should continue to run. Lubricating the supercharger is very important... Mobil 1 is the way to longevity.

Break-in: pick up car from dealer, start up let warm up to operating temp. Drive out of lot, 1st gear easy so you dont spin and hit limiter, 2ndWOT, 3rdWOT, 4thWOT then let of gas and let motor slow you down. Change oil after the first few hundred miles. DO this a few times and the rings will be all sealed up.
GM test every motor before going into a car on a stand. I guess its there new customer quality care thing.

the supercharger is selflubricated and no engine oil ever touches the supercharger.

This is correct. (sealed bearings)

Break in is in the manual.

The LSJ 2.0 is not a low compression engine, it has 9.5:1. This is high in this day and age of crappy gas. Most engines today run 8.0:1, even the SRT-4 I believe is 8.0:1.

Ok here is a question for the guys who have gotten there oil changed in there sc/ss, What kind of mobil 1 oil did you use? the guy at the chevy dealership said that corvettes are "required" to use syntheic oil and the z28's are "recommened" but dont have tp have it. So he looked my car up and said that is has to have syntheic oil but not 100%. HE said it required mixed conventional, oil with syntheic. What has everyone else been using, because the mobil 1 syntheic oil is 49.99!
