Engine Sound S/C 2.0

Maybe i never really ran the engine when the hood was open, but does it make a little bit of a clicking noise when idling? (sort of like the sound when you make a machine gun noise with your tongue, but not very loud) it sounds consistent the whole time...

It sounds normal with the hood shut, but i just installed an intake and i'm paranoid.

please let me know what your 2.0 s/c sounds like?

It sounds like you might have the SC rattle. Coupler in the supercharger. Its not a real big problem and most people just let it go.

You are probably hearing the fuel injectors.

I hear more of a "stuck lifter" clunk clunk type of sound, but only when in idle, during regular driving, it's not there.....Weird...

It is the fuel injectors...

take a screwdrive to the fuel rail and put your ear on the other end.

^ lol is that the magic way to hear things these days. im kidding, i get it, it will vibrate through.

It totally does sound like it is coming from that area (under the guard where the fuel injectors are). The engine sounds normal when the hood is shut, but it does that clicky stuff when idle and the hood is open.

Thanks for giving me some reassurance.

In response to your original question, I think the sounds you speak of are normal. I have a little bit of a rattle sound when it is idle too, I wouldnt be too worried about it unless it gets to be louder, or the sound changes. Check for the sound periodically over the next couple of weeks or month and see if it changes sound, or loudness...

it might be the tensioner.the shop that did the work on my car was hesitant to put my car on the dyno because of the clicking.they figured out that it was coming from the tensioner n they said that the cobras have noisy tensioners too so they said its probably just that.

I agree with him, I'm a GM tech and I just put a Clutchmasters clutch in the car. Then that noise appeared. I thought it was coming from my tranny. Well it arrived when I put the clutch in the vehicle. Coincidently, bc I was beating on my car that much more; it turned out it was a knock from the s/c. I actually found out today through SI (GM Service Information) that its a common problem on the 3.8L S/C that they put on the Monte Carlo SS a few years back. It usually takes a lil while for the sound to show itself but if you beat on your motor and drive high rpms (combined with ahrd launches) it'll show earlier...ur best bet is to wait until it gets worse or your warranty is about to run out then take it to a dealer to get it looked at, they will most likely put this "nose cone" kit on your S/C which will replace the teflon coupler sh*t and the hub and pulley, and problem solved......NOTE: there is no mention of this happening to the Cobalt SS/SC s yet on SI so when you take it to ur dealer, just tell them u have a knocking or what seems to be an almost grinding from the S/C.....but it is a known problem for all the other applications the Eaton was used on for GM...hope this helps

Could also be the tensioner, I'm running my stock one still (non adjustable) and it was ticking/ knocking for awhile then seemed to go away. The easiest way to limit it down to what it is; is to have the car running at idle...Then, grab yourself a long handled screwdriver and stick the blade end on different parts of the motor (like tensioner, valve cover, s/c, etc.) .....and stick the handle end to ur ear to listen for the noise, u'll notice where the noise is coming from...if the noise is very faint, have someone sit in the vehicle and rev the motor slightly to make the noise more noticable or louder......a screwdriver is the poor mans stethoscope and a great diagnostic tool for a backyard mechanic to listen for bearing noise or even lifter noise........

Look up a post put up by fr33k. There seems to be a problem with the timing chain in some cars. Find the post and read through it, he goes more into detail further on.

a SECRET TSB I thought everyone should know about

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I started noticing a rattle noise every now and then on my engine of the SS/SC about a month ago. Every time I let one of the guys here at work listen it wouldn't do it . It finally done it with them around. They called GM and they said there is a TSB on what has happened to my car.

We asked what's the number and we will look at it. The rep said that it is not available to the public. It's only available on a call in basis. So I thought I would make it available to the peeps here

Lucky me has to have the front of his engine torn apart for a better timing set.

WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ENGINES
2.0 ENGINE (VIN P - RPO LSJ)
2.2 ENGINE (VIN D OR F - RPO L61)
2.4 ENGINE (VIN B OR P - RPO LE5)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

CONDITION/CONCERN:

On rare occasions, a tick or rattle noise may be heard from behind the front cover of the engine and/or pieces of a timing chain roller may be found during an oil change. This may be the result of a timing chain concern.

Non-heat treated timing chain rollers were randomly installed in the assembly line hoppers. He advised that this happened sometime between 4/1/06 - 11/1/06 so it can randomly affect late 2006 - early 2007 models.

RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:

If this concern is experienced, inspect the timing chain for missing or damaged timing chain rollers. If a missing or damaged timing chain roller is found, replace the timing chain and gears using the part numbers currently listed in the parts catalog.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
