Exhaust problem common on '05's?

Well I've been hearing a rattling sound from the exhaust, so I figured a leak. I put it on a rack in my shop, and not a single leak. Nothing with the sniffer at all. I revved it up, and used a tool to check for excess noise. It went ape **** when I put it by the Flexpipe. I revved it again, and I definitely heard rattling. I just wanted to check to see if flexpipes are a common problem, or if it's just loose. I don't want to tighten an already-torqued pipe and break it/cause more problems...

It's not the heat shield, and it doesn't sound like a cat to me. We looked at it and the flex pipe was literally rattling. We watched it move above 2,000 RPM. So I believe it's a faulty flex pipe.. I'd have to look at the car later on this week to check for variables, but im almost positive.

When the car is cold, crawl under and knock on the cat. If it rattles its toast.

I have an 05 ss and i was hearing a noise coming from the flex pipe. thought it was a leak. when i took it to dealership they told me it was a cat problem and replaced it. This was after approx 25000 miles.

At 50000 my flex pipe completely seperated itself from teh flange while on road

They suck... get a new dp before it happends, because it will...

i have the same problem. you guys are wrong. the rattling noise is from your muffler. your fume net in side the muffler burned up. you cant fix it, unless you cut your muffler open in half.. lol. but yea i had that problem for a while. i just bought a dc sport exhaust for 200 of a guy. and about to put it on. because that noise is annoying me totally now.

No.. its actually not the muffler...

Why when i replaced my down pipe (considering it BROKE OFF from the flange that held it to the manifold), the noise stopped?

The rattle comes before the flex pipe breaks... Its reverbing from the flex to the muffler, making it seem like its coming from there... its not...

It was definitely not the muffler. It was the flexpipe/dp piece that connects the exhaust manifold to the cat to the silencer muffler. I have an 8 year emission warranty, so i'm getting it replaced free of charge tomorrow

His was the dp... yours could actually be the muffler... different sounds at different places

ya at 20k i blew the whole side of my flex pipe out, it started by a rattle, sounded like a bolt was lose, then a small leak sound, then a 3 inch hole by an inmch wide appeared in my flex pipe!! loud as hell, it was 450.00 for the new flex pipe and ctalytic converter, BUT.... yours should still be under warranty, since they have around a 6 or 7 year warranty on them, run it till it blkows, get it fixed and do it again, till you save enough for the new upgraded one

yea, js saw your post! i had the same thing happen to me. took it gm, and it was still under ewarrenty so they relaced it free. it's the baffles in the stock muffler that go bad. this new one they put on is only a few months old and it's doing it again. getting sick of this stock one. gettting different muffler put on soon.
