Exhaust question

Don't know if this has been asked yet but I will ask anyway. If I want to keep my stock muffle and just purchase 3'piping, will I get the same performance as if I were to get an aftermarket exhaust? Will it that do the trick? I am thinking of this cause I am not too impressed at the way that some of the exhaust's (aftermarket) sound. The stock muffle is fine, for now.

save your $$. no gains are really going to come out of three inch piping out of the stock exhaust. I sliced the stock exhaust open, for a very supposed *free flowing* exhaust this thing has to go through like 8 chambers before it finally leaves the muffler. That's how they get it so damn quiet. Doubt it will yield any gains.

I like my stock exhaust sound too. Most of the exhuasts on the market right now for the SS are of the ricer type and not worth the $550+ price tag.

The stock muffler is a tad restrictive but it is no better than say a Flowmaster or spintech.

If you wanted to keep it decent sounding you could replace the OE muffler with a straight through oval bodied one. Unlike fart cans oval mufflers flow the same but have more room and roving material to absorb the unwanted ricer sounds.

i had 3in cat on my ss/sc but decided it was to loud, so what i did was put the stock pipe back on and cut the muffler off b4 the brace, then i welded 2 1/4in tube to 3 in to my new muffler a Vibrant Perfomance tpv turbo muffler, sounds excellent not as loud as the 3in but sounds very nice. it doesnt sound ricey has a nice deep tone. ill post pics later on if ur interested in this set up

Here's a question on that note. Could I just purchase a really good muffler to open up the exhaust but still have it sound good?(not a fart can) ? If yes, would there be any performance advantages?

Re-Read the last part of my post.

And with a muffler only the gains would most likely be similar to the rice systems some are paying mega bucks for. The muffler is the only real restriction in our exhausts.

It's not the round muffler that makes the "fart" sound it's the I4 exhaust pulses that generate that sound.

The round mufflers just have less restriction and maintain exhaust velocity better than the oval mufflers or stock muffler.

When you increase the diameter the exhaust gases are traveling (like a muffler or resinator) through the gases slow down and it backs up. This backup quiets down the exhaust note.

So you have to make a decision for yourself on how you want to balance sound vs performance.

Putting on another muffler will probably increase your performance, but I can tell you that right now there aren't many people in the SS/SC community that have done that and as such there isn't much information out there and experience for our car. If ppl have swapped muffler I encourage them to speak up.

Pretty much you are going to have to wait for someone to try it first and see what they have to say. Or be like me and others who have done something on their own and experimented. I can tell you the shop that did my exhaust tried a couple different things before we were happy with the results. You can see what I have to say and decide hey Zinner and AAM have done most of the work for me and I like what they have come up with and get their system. Or you can decide differently and try something else.

I have Sound clips of my exhaust. I have a 3 inch system with a Vibrant ultra quiet resinator and a Vibrant TPV Turbo muffler. You can watch the clips and decide for yourself.

the silencer will help you regain some of your backpressure that you'll lose by switching mufflers

For your engine 2.25 is all you will ever need, 2.5 will do nothing on your var but olse power. If you plan on FI then 2.5 all the way.

I bought a street series magnaflow oval muffler and am custom bending 2.25 in pipe for my own cat back system and it is costing me well under 200 bucks and i think that it will sound real nice with the 2.2. When i figure out how to post a vid clip i will.

What is our Stock piping size? 2.5? or2.25? I know it's pretty thick for stock that's why I am interested in just swapping the muffler and keeping the stock pipe. Anyone that has done/is doing this please post thoughts, pics, more importantly, video.
