F35 Second Gear Issue

Yeah, I know. We all have issues with this tranny. My second gear grinds under power or hard shifting (but still shifts when shifted soft).

Second has always acted a little funny, and I'm blaming it on A.) Prob a bent fork which in turn is probably causing B.) pissed off synchro.

Any one have info on where we can get forks, cables and synchros?

Big thanks to Dirty25RS for helping me try to figure out the prob here.

I once had a second gear issue.

It grenaded through the side of the case.

Still haven't figured it out. Adjusted the cable ends, but it only helped a bit. Still grinds in second.

Thinking it might be a bad master or slave....but I feel like it would give me issues in every gear if it were either.

Your cable adj. will not make the gear grind. If your clutch is disengaging when you push the pedal down then it's not a bad master or slave. You more than likely don't have a bent shift fork. The shift forks in these trannies are pretty bad ass. I would guess you just have a bad syncro, either from abuse, low fluid, or the clutch not disengaging when you push it in, and allowing the trans to speed up properly. Does the clutch disengage when you push it in, does the car role forward when you try to put in gear?

I'm having a similar issue with my second gear as well. I was thinking it was prob a bad synchro. Only happens in second too.

Never tried seeing if it moves when shifting in second from a stand still.

But mine will just grind randomly while driving around. Upshift from first, GRIND. But then if I double clutch, it magically disappears!

Bad syncro. Had this happen to my 5th gear. After a while you will notice that it will begin to pop out of gear under acceleration, then you will have to start holding your hand on the shifter to keep it in gear, then finally, in the deathstrokes, it wont stay in gear no matter how hard you hold it. Causes: Not fully engaging clutch when shifting into gear. Not engaging clutch to remove from gear (just yanking it out of gear into neutral without clutch).

The tranny will have to be pulled and the 2nd gear assembly will have to be rebuilt - good luck finding the parts too. I waited 3 months for a 5th main gear, syncro, and a spring because they were on "backorder" - finally ended up buying a salvage tranny out of an 07 with 35k miles for 800 bucks. GM took a big **** on me there.

wow this is exactly what I'm going through right now. Just got the car back from the dealer after a month of fighting with them. Last time they had my tranny out they had the clutch assembly off and never tightened the pressure plate bolts when they bolted the new tranny back on. Well the flywheel dow pins flew out and destroyed the clutch pressure plate and front case in the new trans.

So now when i'm driving it wants to jump out of gear just like you guys were describing. and it does the roll when your at a complete stop and try to put it in gear. and when i got back from a 3 mile test drive i parked it in the driveway and at idle it sounds like a bumble bee right there at the bell housing.

It wouldn't even surprise me a bit if they didn't put and fluid in the thing and the bearings are already gone. But the syncro is def out. It's getting picked up tomorrow.... again

@ roboticfister:

How long did it take for it to finally take a **** on you? Ever since I've had the Cobalt, Second gear has always tried to pop its self out of gear. It just recently started grinding. Like I said, double clutching makes it happy.

trying to align how much time i have to save for a new tranny lol

Mine took a few weeks once I started having to hold it into gear. You'll have to replace 2nd main gear too if you let it grind. Let me know if you need the assembly, I have a perfectly good trans minus 5th gear laying around
