use premium only. don't worry too much about the bad mileage, it will improve after a few hundred miles.

it's pretty rare for a dealer to put premium.

Get a tank of premium, reset your fuel mpg; reset it while cruising in 4th gear or so. If you reset it and then floor it, it will shoot down low and take a while to average out your mileage, same thing with if you let off the gas in 5th, it will be way too high and take a long time to average the general MPG you get. If you reset it during moderate speeds it will be at a reasonable number that you start from.

it will take a while to get good mileage... also remember that the biggest thing that affects mileage is driving habits... i can get 40 mpg cruising on the highway, or 19 being an ******* on the highway. a company will advertise the BEST mileage, and the only way youj're gonna get that is to drive like an old man.

This is true. Honestly, when I got the car I sat around 21mpg for a week or two , but then I calmed down and went up to 28mpg average 50/50 highway/street.

I haven't ever actually measured using the trip meter (I should); but I would say a full tank would last me roughly a week. See the thing is though that I always thought that buying a car with better fuel mileage would help me to save some money. I was wrong however. I went from an Acura Legend (Nice car, just old 92') that got around 21mpg to the my SS/SC which gets about 29mpg. The thing is, is that even though my Cobalt gets better mileage than my Legend did, it's much more fun to drive in a "spirited" manner and is much more quick. My point is that, although it does give you more mpg, it's hard to resist then driving more in your ss/sc than your previous cars (for you daily driver).

Edit: Actually with Stage II I have dropped slight in MPG because I get on her a little more often than before, but it still gets 26mpg average.

Probably because it's making it run richer a/f as a countermeasure for detonation (knock). If you have a higher octane in (premium like said), it could run slightly leaner because the gas has more resistance to detonation.

This is all theoritical though...I don't have logs or anything to tell you 100%

It is theoretical if you are talking about logged numbers that we can see for this car; but if you're talking about in general it's proven. When talking about cruise speeds and stoichiometry, optimal timing and AFR is proven to increase efficiency and therefore gas mileage.
