Head bolts breaking?!?!?!
Dealer said it is very common for SS/SC to have head bolts break off inside the motor causing a tapping noise. First of all I took in for the rattling coming from the timing cover, I had a check engine like for crank and cam sensor correlation bank 1. Im thinking thats related to the timing chain! There is a TSB for the tensioner and I've seen its a common problem with a lot of people on here. If anyone has heard of head bolts breaking please let know! dealer wants 415 to tear it down and look!

what aftermarket parts? they need to prove that whatever parts you have caused the headbolts to break. But if he came right out and said that it is a common occurrence then he is admitting that it happens to stock cars and therefore cannot prove that your aftermarket parts caused the damage

Right, but its obvious that im not stock and they want money to tear down and see what the problem is and then tell me they wont fix it cuz of aftermarket parts

it doesn't matter that you are not stock... they still need to PROVE that your aftermarket parts caused the damage which he will be unable to do...
What mods do you have done? cuz I dont see anything in your signature that they could claim would be responsible

Dude where is the car? at the dealer?
just go down there and take the valve cover off your self. if there is broken bolts then you will be able to take them out with your hand right. I think they are full of ****. the timing seems to be out. does it run bad? you might be able to check chain tension and see if it is possible for the chain to skip on tooth.
hope that helps.

wow, that sucks man. You have to be careful with the dealer though, cause all they have to do is say that it happened because you were racing and your screwed. If they can relate it to you beating on your car in any way, your screwed. trust me I know.

Theres a thing called the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, that by law makes dealerships work on cars under warranty unless that said after market parts caused that problem. And if this is a common problem with the car i would change the studs out with ARP studs, so you only have to go through this once and if you plan on pushing more hp you don't have to worry about it.

they would have to prove that too
I've never had this problem because i got friends who work at the dealership.
Some dealership mechanics are cool about it because they don't get paid unless they do the work. Go to a dealership that basically does warranty work at try them...?

Racing means taking the car to a sactioned race and race the car. but going to a drag strip, leave the line with being an idiot (we actually have GM warranty police in manitoba) and your ok. I have full warranty. just had fuel sending unit replaced, airconditioning condensor replaced, exhaust fixed. they gave me an HHR to drive while they fixed it. cant beat it.

My point is that its clearly not broken head bolts, if it were I would be leaking coolant internally, it would probably be blowing white smoke, and run like crap. It runs fine, just noisy. I do need a better tune because im steady misfiring but im pretty sure its the timing chain. Using a stethascope you can clearly hear the noise coming from the timing cover. I also gad CEL for Crank/Cam Sensor Correlation which would be due to excessive slack in the chain, causing sensor to malfunction. ALSO!! There is a TSB for the chain tensioner, my car is a couple months shy of when the TSB was issued. Im tearing it down as we speak and Im going to find out for myself what the issue is. I'll keep everyone posted.
