Why do you need to time it?

Did you make marks on cam gears and crank pulley when you took it apart? If you did you can just line those up and your good to go.

2 full turns of the crank = 1 turn for the cams.

Damn it's been so long since I did it that I've forgot. Is the engine out of the car?

If so, you can use the colored links on the chain to line it up. The LSJ build book that is stickied on the redline forums has the info in it that you need. Basically the colored links won't line up until after a ton of rotations again just like you said.

I believe the cam gear marks will be 180 out for one full turn of the crank and line back up on the second full turn. Make sure you double check it though and have a friend handy to turn the wrenches on the cams to align the gears while you put the chain on and ensure the crank pulley doesn't come off the TDC mark.

How about a link directly to all the GM build books instead?
If you scroll down on the page the links for the 300+ecotec build is there too which is also helpful about some details, but I think the info you want is in the LSJ books.
