crackling sound or a ticking noise like the timing chain slapping around because the tensioner has worn out?

is the sound coming from the passenger side/rear of the motor?

does it go away when you are driving at 2500 or so and up rpm? then come back when you're idling or really low rpm?

if so you can pretty much bet it's the timing chain tensioner. that's a $20~ part from napa and takes about 10 minutes to install a new one
