how does the lsj and lnf balance themselves
how does the lsj and lnf balance themselves
ok i got a lsj im turning into rwd and i need the flywheel off the solstice lnf. i know they will bolt up but will there be any issues on the balancing of the swap? how does the lsj get balanced by the crank, flywheel? and is the lnf the same or balanced differently than the lsj?
balance shafts are just there to cancel out the inherent vibrations a 4 cylinder creates. the actual balancing is the rotating assembly, meaning crank, rods, pistons, pins, rings, balancer, flywheel, and even the clutch. the lsj and lnf (and all ecotecs) are internally balanced motors, meaning there are no counter weights on the flywheel or balancer, both are neutrally balanced. you will be able to bolt the solstice flywheel up and it will be ok.
im going to assume your just dropping a complete lsj in. if you were going to build the motor id recommend sending everything out to be balanced. it makes a huge difference in how smooth the motor is

nah it will be complete and i just got the solstice tranny so i need to get the fw,clutch and pp, and slave cylinder. and i should be good to start my fabbing for mounts and other little piddly stuff. yeah im putting it in a 69 nova that originally came with a 4cyl. so i got a main componet out of the way getting the tranny so im excited to start putting stuff together.

nah it isnt that much heavier the one i have is around 2940 from what the resource sight says and the cobalt specs have it at 2760. and with me putting the all aluminum ecotec and replace the cast iron 3-speed for the solstice i should be around the same weight as the cobalt. if i had the money i want to put a new subframe with the coil overs in it and that would shave a ton of wieght off but when funds allow it prolly will happen. but as soon as i can i'll throw some pics up.
ok finally got solstice trannymy work screwed me out of some pay so the head honcho order the tranny for me to pay me back. shaawiiinnnggg. hehe but before i put it in gotta pull subframe and sand paint and do all the other prep work to engine bay. updates in the future.
Sweet, now we're going to have 2 3rd gen camaros, a 2 novas with ecotecs, and the talk of an LNF into a miata. Its good to see we're finally getting ecotecs swapped into something besides cavaliers and dune buggys.
Bump for a great idea...
I agree with your weight estimate. I had a 70 v8 with aluminum heads. with me in the car it was 3042lbs. It also had drag stars which helped. I bet your gonna be equal too or less than a cobalt in weight.
Ive been looking for a 65 nova for the same project. They weight in about 2600 with the iron 4 cyl. I can only image how much fun a big turbo ecotec would be in a light rear wheel drive car.
What are you doing for engine management? LSJ ECU or something after-market?
Ive been collecting wiring diagrams for LNF and LSJ trying to decide which way to go since I was thinking I would use the factory GM ECU and harness.
I have a lot to learn before I start though, fueling seems it would be easier for LSJ than LNF but again I don't know much about it yet. let me know what you plan about ECU.
