IAT and IAT2...the official thread.
So, I have been dicussing my IATs with a couple of folks here in Canada. Our ambient temps range from -10 to +10*C (14*F to 50*F) on the average here in Calgary Alberta. Now I've been told that both IATs should be around 20 to 30* above ambient.
So this morning on the way to work I logged both IAT and IAT2. My IAT was hovering around 30*F @ 18*F ambient and my IAT2 by the time I got to work was 100*F @ 18*F ambient.
So my question to everyone with similar ambient temps and no cooling mods on their 2.0L SS/SC other than stock is what are you seeing for IAT and IAT2 while driving conservatively. I am mostly interested in your IAT2 numbers. The reason for this is I trying to discern whether or not I have a problem with my IC pump.
Cheers and thanks

there should be a 20-30F degree difference, the hotter it is the larger the difference
if your driving around and its -10C I doubt your IAT2 is going to be that much different
For instance in the summer it might be 90 degrees out and my IAT2 can go up to 150 sitting at red lights
This time of year though it might be 20 degrees out and my IAT might be 35-40

Damb. I think then that I have a problem. My IC is full of coolant. It was topped up yesterday and on my way to work as I said above my IAT2 by the time I got to work was hovering around 100*F and the outside temp was 18*F (-8*C).
This seems definatly to high acording to you folks.

lay into the gas quickly, and let off it. the iat temps will drop.

i wouldn't say that you have a problem, but id set up the ic pump to run as soon as the key is turned on and see what happens. sometimes when it is cold out and the iat hit's a certain temp it shuts off.

I found that when i am off the gas while cruising like when going down a hill, my IAT2 temps rise slightly, but as soon as I get back on the throttle lightly they go back down.
It was 3 Degrees F last night and i seen a low of 44 F IAT2 temp with average being around 50-55 F , my car was at operating temp
Area47 neglected to mention he is spraying the water/meth
my car with nothing but stage 2 is running 150-160 IAT2 in the summer while running it hard. i had no cooling mods wahtsoever. my IAT1 is always about 5, maybe 10 at most, above ambient. i dont worry alot about my IATs unless i see some retarded high number like 180+. you'll drive yerself insane, as well as poor, trying to achieve uber low IAT's in the pursuit of that extra couple HP. the main thing is to keep them out of the pre-detonation temp range.

What is the pre detonation range. You see thats why I am trying to find out what people with just the OEM IC are getting. Most of the guys I talked to all have cooling mods (whether Meth inj., No/single/dual pass + H/E) I believe. I can't see how down stream of the SC the temps would not be noticably higher than Upstream if the only cooling I have is the IC. With mods such as Meth inj. and a H/E you are injecting a cooling agent into the intake as well as having a No/single/dual pass + H/E to help keep them at those lower temps.
Unfortunatly people are not reading my original post fully (no offense guys). like I said my IAT1 = 30*F and buy the time I got to work the IAT2 = 100*F give or take and at a rest the would rise slightly then settle back down once I got going again.
Keep It coming guys. I think this is a good discussion.
thanks

if you do the stop light to stop light crap, yes it is going to rise. i only hit 3 lights on my way to work anyways, the rest is highway driving at 55-70 mph.
without knowing the exact way you drive, or exact temps all the time, it's hard to come up with a conclusion

Ask him what my IAT2s usually are! Because I don't know!
ah sorry. i thought we were talking about the temps after a good hard flogging of the throttle
i am on the bone stock cooling system. in the winter my IAT2 is like 10-20* higher than the IAT1. but in the summer it can be as much as 60* or more higher than IAT1. if its 80 outside, my iat2 could be anywhere from 140-155.
as for the detonation range, there is no set number that will result in detonation, but generally if you are much above 170 on the iat2, its not very healthy.

This morning was fairly easy going traffic. I am basically on highway most of the time. I was running about 100km/hr (60 mil/hr) for a good 20 minutes no stop and go trafic at 83*C (181*F) operating temp. Once I got off the freeway I only had to stop at 4 lights and only waited at them at most 1 to 4 minutes.
cheers

Where is the pump?
I am going to drive around at lunch the open the IC and see if there is any circulation once it gets to operating temp (don't worry I have a lot of experience and wont burn myself. I once ran a oil lube shop.). Now here is the other kicker. The IC was topped up at the dealer yesterday well above the hot mark and I was just outside for a smoke and thought I would check the level and it is back down to the hot mark. I think I might have a leak because it keeps bleeding off somewhere. I just had the oil changed and went under the car to check for leaks about a month ago but did not find anything.

when you say "cruising" if your talking about going a nice healthy 70km-100km
then your IAT2s are VERY high right now, like we discussed yesterday.
but area brought up a good point, stop/starting will jack that up.
when my normal cruising is at 50* IAT2, if i pull into town, and stop for a minute, its gonna shoot up to 70-80 quite quickly, and begin heat soaking as it sits there.
so what is your drive to work like?

Where do you control the IC pump in HPT? I had a problem like this before so I put a Cobra H/E pump on it(same one) and now I am having another problem w/ it. It could be some air in the line but I flushed the system and put some frest water and waterwetter in it and it is still doing the same thing. On a side note, my stock pump wasnt blown, but the connection on it was messed up. So you might want to check that.
