If the power steering unit only draws electrical power, and all electrical power on a car comes from the engine, then removing the fuse to the power steering unit is a cheap and speedy way to increase horsepower.

But how much horsepower???
i really dont know what to tell you... you... need to go ahead and not even touch your car and learn about them.. you are using theory in something we already know about from proven facts.. dont be an idiot.. throw the resistor away.. performance chip.. right.. go to walmart and buy some resistors .. thers your performance chip

christ almight.. are you really trying to tell me Battery Currents from your understanding of transfer of heat/energy is going to net you power...

i can't even think straight you made me feel so stupid with this comment

LOL its not like the car made 400hp till they added a powersteering pump, A/C compressor and all that. By disabling the PS all you will do is make the car a pain in the ass hole to turn a slower speeds, why the hell would you want to do that? Go on a diet and make ur car get another 500hp by taking out the rear tire too.

maybe we should just give him some NAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ stickers.. they might make any dents or scratches on the car "flush" so air currents will have a smooth path around the car..

Will the same thing happen if my power steering is shut off (by simply removing the fuse)???

Thanks for the great answers!
heres an idea. remove your PS, and drive off a cliff slowly. I want you to get it on vid so I can see the performance gains.

You all are unforgiving. The first few initial posts made a sound answer.

Please note that in my original post I said: "If you’re an idiot, please don’t reply. Or at least write a serious answer telling me why this won't work."

What are you talking about? I got 5 completely different answers!

One guy told me the power steering unit was pulled by a belt.

Another guy said it was electrically powered.

Another guy had no idea what 'thermodynamics' meant so he gave some bonehead answer that made him sound smart.

I'm not sure anyone on here has any idea what they're talking about. And when they're truly an idiot they write insults.

This forum is such a waste of time. I thought I'd find a serious answer to my question.

Go with the guys with the electrical steering pump. You will not see hp increase by removing a fuse. Yes there are people that dont help at all, it happens unforuntatly.

The power steering motor draws a maximum of 58 amps. That would be sitting still or slow speed turning. 58 amps isn't really a whole lot. You won't be needing to make max horsepower while sitting still or turning so I see no need to disable the p/s system. In theory, if you aren't turning then you aren't using any amps, granted it may take a little bit just to help keep the wheel straight but I'm sure it's minimal. Also if you do pull that fuse you will trigger various codes and a Service Steering message of some kind. Id say leave it alone, the small, if any, power gain isn't worth it.

guys the dude is dead set on doing it no amount of answers will sway him you can tell by his not understanding that the balt is electric assist steering. Your better off losing 5 or 10 pounds on your own body than doing this fuse pulling mod.

Thank you for your informative answer. I suspected this was true but wanted the intelligent opinion of others.

Doesnt matter, all cobalts use electric power steering. Best part about it is that it DOES NOT USE ANY POWER unless you are turning, thats why Chevy uses it anyway, to improve the gas milage. Pulling the fuse will net you no gain in highway situations because the power steering EPS motor is not doing anything unless you are turning, and even then it only draws enough to make it easy to turn, which isn't a lot a speed. Nice idea, but you are wasting time looking at the P/S system as a power saver.

Between his and my posts, you have what you need. There is nothing to gain, you can do it if you like, but you will see no noticable difference as the system is designed to NOT draw power unless you are turning.
