intercooler

i havent exactly looked thru the previous posts but i want to know is how come i have yet to see anyone with an intercooler. as far as i knew i thought anything with boost could use a FMIC(front mount). i have seen cars with them before and they were supercharged. and i thought the ion redline came with one. so how come no one has 1? if im wrong someone help me out.

well I know the cobalt SS/SC comes with an intercooler, as for upgrades though, I have not looked into that yet. I'm pretty sure the stock one will hold up till a reasonable amount of Hp that you put in the car.

intercooler I think better known as the heat exchanger doesnt have any upgrades to date I would be very interested if there is one. The only thing you could do now is move the intercooler infront of the rad and air condenser instead of its stock position in between.

We should start seeing upgrades soon. The car is still new in the aftermarket world.

The intercooler is located under the blower.

You are referring to the heat exchanger, which is a front mount. All cars have them. You won't gain any hp by upgrading it, you can only help to fight heat soak, and keep the coolant temps lower for a longer time. There aren't any upgrades available yet, because I have yet to see cars overheating. When cobra's started overheating, people then started upgrading the intercoolers.

you dont necessarily need to have ur car overheat to start upgrading. you upgrade for better performance or better numbers. some people downgrade for better numbers. look at the subarus who move it from top mount to front mount for better forced air induc to the IC. and then they go like a size wider or longer. w.e. either way thats the point really. well unless you were only talkin about the heat exchanger

Our cars have a Water - Air intercooler, that's why you don't see the big front mount intercooler. It is located under the blower and is part of the intake manifold. If you want to change it your going to need to fab a whole new intake manifold.

only because the top mount can only handle so much and there isnt much room to go big enough for some of the turbos people are running. So they move them in front so they can benefit from the increase size....of course this has benefits and drawbacks. It wont get heat soaked while at idle since the engine isnt under it anymore, but the longer piping will increase turbo lag. Two things you guys will never have to worry about....

I'm running the stock TD04 turbo and if I were to goto a larger intercooler I would lose performance. So I imagine maybe the Cobalt doesnt push enough PSI to warrant a larger intercooler and a bigger one would only hurt performance.

The best way to upgrade the IC setup is create a chiller box for the IC liquid.

GM also experimented with having the liquid make multiple passes through the IC before returning to the aftercooler(the heat exchanger up front). They found a 2 pass set up to be the best. Stock set up is a single pass.

see i wanna try something i love custom...i want to do a front mount (since a turbo is pushing the boost a supercharger is pulling, but its still 12psi) so....mount a font mount where its saposed to be. Then pipe from the throttle body to one side of the FMIC. then finally on the opposite side an intake that goes somewhere idn) dyno stock then dyno an intake then dyno with that set up see if it gains or losses. its still cooling the air, also you can intercooler spray (nitrous to freeze the FMIC) just an idea

You want the intercooler after the the air is compressed, not before. It miht help a little, but not nearly as much if you were to cool the air after it is compressed. This would result in a mess of piping that would in delay throttle response, and decrease boost levels, and overly complicate things.

the stock intercooler in the redline is alot more efficient then a front mount intercooler could ever be, a front mount is nothing more then a psi stealer, causing delays through piping and being a less then stellar design. Granted they look cool, but the water/methane to air combo we have allows the car to boost decently stock, no real wasted horse power.

eventually someone will come out with an upgrade for the cooling system but i doubt very much it will be a front mount...... however i think the twincharger kit has a front mount for the turbo, but im not sure.

we have an intercooler underneath the supercharger and an aftercooler inbetween the condenser and the radiator, at least that is my understanging

That is correct. The intercooler is actually built into the intake manifold.
