Yea there is a break in period, you shouldn't have it in the high rpms until the first 500-1000 miles.

Congrats, and yes, just be easy the first 1,000 miles and easy on the brakes too for the first 200 miles, so don't do any sudden stops, make sure you leave yourself enough room to stop slowly. Other than that, enjoy your beautiful Cobalt.

The book says to just not hammer it a lot and not to drive at one speed for the first 500 miles. Also there was a really good post a wile back about how to do a really good brake in. I says to Punch it at 1/2 throttle for a 1/2 mile and the slow down and do a cool down. Then start off aggressive at 3/4 throttle and couple of times for another 1/2 mile or more and always cool down after each run. Then do a cupple of WOT runs for 1/2 mile. Then you should be good. Also try to do this at a closed track.

yes the manual says 500, but guess what. the people who drove your car for the first 10-15 miles at lordstown werent exaclty gentle with your car
i was very hard on my car for first 1000 miles with no problems.
im not pushing my ideas upon you by any means im just lettin you know that i doubt you will harm your car.
o your manual also says to avoid engine braking/downshifting for the first 500miles
i did that every time i came to a stop as well...
