Lets talk about PISTONS

ok. i just got done talking to my mechanic. he said pistons will need to be replaced at about 300 whp. Isnt everyone worried or are they just going to get pistons and pay like $2000 when it comes time. No one seems to be worried about when the pistons go. just post yoru comments abotu pistons on here so myself and otehrs can get an idea of whats to come with this issue.

350hp max, that is 290WHP on our cars. I'm guessing i'm around 280-283 now so time will tell!

I hit 277HP before the pulley, tune and INJ's. I figure conservatively It feels like allot more has been gained.

Lets talk about PISTONS

Well from what littel i know stock factory pistons that are cast<<<<<. Can take about 2 years of abuse from drag raceing or 2 seasons pushing them over 6500 rpms, Thats why forged are usually the choice even though they make abit more noise, i dont know where he would come up that our pistons in the 2.0 are only good for 300 hp. .And one more note on the cast pistons after the abuse of 2 seasons you would sometimes find hair line cracks in them .

What defines a season? The idea that stock pistons are only good to a certain HP came from the GM build book, from the fact that they are cast, and from people like Fast06SS who are more knowledgeable than myself. More Noise from forged? Will I find hairline cracks after 1.62 "seasons"? What are you saying?

We use to use that as a rule of thumb back i n the old days if you drag race 2 full seasons on the cast pistons over 6500 rpms . the ones i seen pushed past that would have hair line cracks in them but the motor still ran fine. Im no expert thats what we would go for years back. since forgrd had a $$ to them to the poor racers. And yes forged would make more noise in a chevy than the cast.

Bottom LINE TIME WILL TELL on these motors

This makes no sense to me. It is going to cost more to put in new pistons if one fails while going at top speed because now you also get to pay for all the damaged parts as well. As Mr. Spock would say "that is not logical"

I noticed that the GM LSJ 300hp build say that the stock pistons are "eutectic". Are these the same as a hyper eutectic? If not, we could use cast hyper eutectic pistons, instead of forged. The hyper eutectics will be cheaper and quiter than forged.

Well, at least when they go you'll have a perfect excuse for upgrading all your internals and then you won't have to worry about it anymore. :P Just pray the rods don't turn the block into swiss cheese. hehe.

Just because the blocks are rated at 300hp doesn't mean they'll just snap at 300hp. A week of running at 280 could very well mess a few things up. At this point I would start getting my **** togeather or snag a spare block for WHEN this one goes. In this case, I would see the rods bending and buckling before the pistons decide to give up.

The rods and crank are both forged and will go way past 300. The pistons are the weak link. The valve springs need to be changed past 7,000rpms.

I've heard that all but the pistons and the valve springs are good for 600 hp and more for some parts. Not sure of the credibility of the source. He said he had heard it from an engineer that helped work on the LSJ.

didn't know the rods and crank were forged. sry.

if they put forged crank and rods in there, why didn't they go the step further and go with hyp. pistons?
