the shinny metal cover on top of the engiene. remove that. then you will see for black COPs lol. Coil over plugs. remove those and the plugs are underneath them.

Is there anything special about these spark plug cables compared to regular spark plug cables?

The regulars one can have a difference in power per each spark. The coil on plugs maintian an even amount of power per each spark. Can help prefent misfires...

Everything... They are not at all like normal spark plug wires, they are actually more correctly defined as you said, as cables. As you can see if you look at the pic above, there are actually 4 wires going to each coil, the coil makes a direct connection to the plug.

This setup basicaly eliminates having to change plug wires, also a nice side effect it that most 4cyl cars have only a 2 coil setup, meaning that it actually sends power to 2 plugs at a time, of course only 1 is on it's power stroke, and in theory by some physics that I don't want to understand, only that one actually fires.

In our system however, it can be assured that only the right plug fires at the right time, also in theory every cylinder could possibly be individually tuned.(not sure about if the last bit is actually done in our pcms) And you only have to replace single coils if one dies, not the whole coil pack as in typical cars.

Another vehicle that is using this system is the 2007 Jeep Compass, I'm sure there are/will be others.

Both plugs fire, but the companion Cylinder is on its exhaust stroke so it is dubbed "waste spark system"

When your doing them at night in a parking lot, it takes a little longer than 10 minutes. The box says to gap at .35.

The spark plugs are actually located underneath the lugnuts on the rear passengers tire, the Cobalt uses a RSP remote spark plug system, which places the spark plugs on the wheels for excess cooling.

Actually disconnecting the negative is proper. It is the dead connection and will cut the circuit without a chance of spark or accidently zapping something upon reconnection.
Just FYI
